To service the clutch, with the engine shut down, retain the slave cylinder push rod with the plastic retainer strap captive between the push rod and fork. Simply pull the fork toward the front of the truck until the retainer strap ends can fit into the retaining slots on the slave cylinder. If you don't have a retaining strap, you'll see later why you wish you did. Remove the slave cylinder. Remove the fork boot. Remove the fork by pulling firmly toward the driver side frame rail. Remove the fork pivot ball. Coat a rag with solvent, and wipe down the transmission input shaft, removing as much grease and grime as possible by sticking your hand in the opening. Yes it is tight! Yes it is painfull! Use a flashlight and mirror to verify cleanliness. Rotate the rag or change it out often. Once clean, tag a big handfull of wheel bearing grease, and reach in and slather up the throw out bearing, working it into the bearing race. Having a spare TOB on hand to examine, will help you feel where to put the grease. Spend an inordinate amount of time messaging, kneeding, squeezing and pressing the grease into the only available crevice around the circumfrence of the bearing. Smear grease over the lenght and circumfrence of the transmission input shaft, and slide the bearing back and forth to verify proper motion. Slide the bearing forward fully, before retracting your hand. Re-install the pivot bolt. Verify it is not heavily worn, and replace if it is. Examine the contact points on the fork. There is a specification in the service manual that prescribes the allowed amount of wear at the tips of the fork. If this is exceeded, replace the fork. Put grease on the fork tips, and in the socket for the pivot ball. Re-install the fork, ensuring that the fork fingers engage the proper place on the TOP, and the pivot ball seats in the fork socket. Reinstall the boot. Reinstall the slave cylinder. Retract the fork and put presure on the push rod so you can release the retaining strap arms. Allow the push rod to push the fork into it's resting place.
