How do big man hands fit in that spot? Doing a hard line delete soon and changing the pump at the same time.
I remove the vacuum pump which helps open that area a LOT... make sure the pumps cam-lobe is on the LOW spot~the heel of the cam. If not you can bump the engine over with a remote start or putting a breaker-bar on the crank bolt at the balancer. Using a mirror and flashlight to view the cam~lobe.
The inside bolt can be a little tricky because you can't see it, it's removed and installed by 'feel'.

I was thinking about changing the pump too as I have no clue how old the present one is, the truck is a rescue from a bad PO. I've been replacing a few things on a preventative basis.

Thanks for all the advice, as soon as my rear end is back together I'm getting into the engine for a bit.

I couldn't drive mine yet but I did wear this around yesterday. After voting of course. They wouldn't let me wear it in to vote.
"They" wouldn't let you wear a sweatshirt to vote?!? That's a funny shirt I don't care who you are. Did they make everyone with a Harris shirt take that off, too? I'm totally amazed you can't wear your team's jersey TO THE SUPERBOWL... cookoo

(says the guy who's in WA, where the entire state gets mail-in ballots. I'm almost 42 and I've literally never waited in line to vote for anything.)

I drove my beloved TIDI to work all week! With a fresh ZF-5 and BW 1356 rebuild done in a mere 30-ish hours of working time... -Lame lots of lessons learned and it's *mostly* what I wanted. I think a few parts were worn more than spec but I got the synchros and bearings all new and shiny and sent it. She shifts a lot better than she used to!

One small thing that makes a big difference is having an SKF throw out bearing after having a dying LuK stocker in there. It's SO MUCH smoother to engage the clutch now, it does what you tell it to! Very nice.

I helped my dump truck eat another E4OD. Well…

Anyone have dump truck food, er, 4WD E4ODs for sale within several hundred miles of eastern Kansas? I don’t feel like I use the truck often enough to justify a new/rebuilt unit, a reasonably good used one will probably do me well enough for now.

I do plan on attempting to rebuild one of these finicky slushboxes… since I now have two fubarded ones… but believe me when I say that’s not very high up the priority list… might not even be on the priority list.

How do you keep blowing them up? Just loading them too much?

Well I haven’t ever driven it on the highway, just backroads and around the farm, poor ******* never gets much air movement so it probably gets very hot… and I am a very mean driver… my right foot gives that truck’s fuel pedal no sympathy…it has an enormous trans cooler, biggest I have ever seen actually. Almost as tall and as wide as the radiator.

The truck is very rough, plenty of rust and dents so tearing it up doesn’t bother me as much as it should…

When I bought it, it had a blown up one in it. Came with a questionable used one. Supposedly rebuilt recently but it didn’t seem like it after I pulled the trans pan and looked inside. Never shifted right, seemed weak. I ran it anyways. Now it doesn’t work at all. For a while it was down to just reverse, then that quit working. Oh well. I suppose rebuilding the original one myself is probably worthwhile, but a temporary fix of swapping it for a different used one doesn’t really bother me.

@DougBoy66 what torque converter did you get? I thought that you had recently rebuilt an E4OD…

Shift Rite has a 4 stud diesel converter available, with good words backing it on FTE…

After rebuilding my ZF-5 and BW 1356, I drove it all week to work! But, after 2 days the reverse landing lights I installed weren't working right away. By day 4 I had no reverse at all.

After fiddling for over an hour with wires and my relay and grounds...I finally checked the reverse switch. Busted!

I feel like this is one of the few things you can still get for these trucks that is high quality, sold by motorcraft and not a knock-off. Backup switch on amazon

Now I can see when I back into my side yard at night!

Much water pump replacement fun this weekend. Went pretty well considering I just replaced it 10,000 miles ago.
note to self: do not replace your old water pump with one you have had laying around in the shop for a couple of years. Seemed like a good idea at the time since it only had 30,000 on it and it was a genuine Motorcraft.Turns out WP's dont like being on the shelf for a couple of years. Purchased the new one through NAPA, was a Gates Pump. Hopefully this one last longer than 10,000.

I honestly don't know off the top of my head. It looked the same as the stock one, but I still have the packaging so I will look at it and let you know. It was what the rebuilder mechanic included in his service
