Long time lurker here, first time poster. This forum has been a ton of help over the years of owning a idi! Thank y’all!

I wish I would have rebuilt instead of replace… now I have two broken engines lol.

I’ve been workin on this swap for months now evenings and some weekends, finally got it running about a week ago and no power, black smoke everywhere, wouldn’t build boost at all.

Trying to adjust the ip and fuel had zero effect, thought I may have been 180 out on accident… that’s when I discovered this nightmare. I’ve read about a lifter sticking, but what would cause all 16 to grenade??

The guy I bought the engine from said it came from a great running truck…. Yeah… it ran. That was about it.

I’m really hoping I can avoid pulling the engine out for a total rebuild… all 16 rollers on the lifters are fine, no flat spots and spin true. The cam looks fine also. I’m sure the bottom end did eat some shims and clips though… chew em up and spit em out! Thoughts?

I would check the valve guides. These trucks are famous for the valve guides wearing out. That lets the valve stem move back and forth in the head, and it can tend to get bound and stuck once in a awhile.

Did you verify it had oil pressure to the turbo before start up. On my rebuild I had to remove all the injectors for it build up oil pressure to the turbo.
