Slow starter quick fix??

88' 7.3l idi -My starter looks original spins slow. Full charged new batts. Will crank engine 3-4 revolutions only. All battery cables are new 2/0 and 1/0 gauge. A while back I smoked the starter, I left it on and it started to smoke. I read that replacing the brushes would spin it faster. Any truth? Or just replace while starter?

Ether is another risky solution. A cooked starter will have a lot of wear on the rotor. That's a high dollar part, and with the cost of brushes and a rotor you could just replace it with new.

A few weeks ago a member posted a great deal on DB Starters. New were something like $85.00. Can't beat that price.

The quickest temporary aid is starting fluid, but you must be cautious. Unhook the glowplug relay (white wire, passenger front terminal) or let them cycle and cool ~5 minutes.

I tried to rehab my old starter but wear on the rotor did it in. Still had plenty of meat on the brushes. Arcing and overheating really kills them.

you can spend all day and 85 bucks trying to fix yours,
but odds are you will be somewhere you dont want to be when it takes a crap again.
replace it.
and make sure your grounds are golden.
even corroded terminals will cause this also

I just installed a NAPA Gear Reduction unit in mine this past weekend. I had already done the batteries and cables. Things turns over so fast now it is almost scary.

I would say just replace it with a quality one that has a warranty.

Might be able to replace the bushes, but likely there's other problems too, and that's a lot of work to put into something that may or may not work. For the price just get a new one. If time is an issue you can always get one from the local parts store. I've actually had good luck with autozone surprisingly....

These are not like SBC and SBF starters of the 70's and 80's where you could pick up rebuild kits with brushes and bushings etc...at a parts store..NOPE finding a kit may May...be possible however you still likely have to ship it to you..

Get a reman or new one and be golden. Get a kit and REBUILD yours for another day!

i had been chasing a slow crank issue for a year, i had already replaced the cables and the batteries were good, i replaced the starter with one from advance auto and WOW! not an exaggeration, it cranks 3 times faster and starts immediately! just goto the parts store and replace it.

Brushes aren't easily swapped on these. Can be rebuilt, but not really worth the time/money. (Still need to put together my tech article on diy rebuild)
