Those are typical 20+ year rust belt trucks. Up here, if a vehicle has been driven through the salt for 20+ years and DOESNT look like that, its because its been re-done. I cant tell you how many vehicles Ive scarapped simply because there was nothing left of them. And if you think those fords look bad, you should see what a toyota looks like after a 20 year salt bath.

It really is a shame that more eco friendly alternatives arent used for snow and ice removal around here, literally MILLIONS of vehicles have been scrapped just because they got too rusty to do anything with. You west coasters have NO IDEA what junk really is....

I think the prices of those posted trucks are a bit too high. One guy is asking $1500 for that piece of swiss cheese? I find some people's prices entertaining sometimes. I would pay 15 bucks for it haha. You hit a darn speed bump in that truck and the doors and frame split right in half. Then you have to kick it in 4wd to get the other half of the truck home.

I know that I am blessed with rust free vehicles in my area .. The average condition truck around here is probably a lot nicer than ones in the rust belt, so the ones like the last one I picked up are undesirable. It might have value where you are but it doesn't here, so I can either scrap it or let it sit in my yard forever. I've tried advertising in other areas where someone would want it, but no one ends up wanting them bad enough to drive that far.


I hate scrapping a solid idi.

Sand seems to be a pretty eco safe, effective and cheap alternative. They do this in the UP and Northern Lower much more than the rest of the state. Where I am at they just pour on the salt on everything including a dusting of snow, it may have something to do with Detroit sitting over a massive salt mine. If the didn't salt the road it would look like this >>>:bail<<<.

For your area that truck is probably rough and very undesirable being from the 80's with a old/slow diesel. When you have no rust "rust free" means nothing special. I do thank you for taking the time to salvage some parts before the crusher and offering it up to the rest of us. I too hate to scrap parts. The hardest to scrap was a 1964 F-series cab; the corners were gone, rockers were Swiss cheese, roof had a crease in it, cab mounts were twice the original size, floor pan was flaking; just too far gone to save but still a shame to see history go for a Fiat:cry:. I am not trying to start trouble and say that you should burn for scrapping the truck. I just can't believe the difference between a dry climate and our damp summers and salty winters.

I figured with all the threads from the West Coast and Texas region showcasing some of their beauties, I would throw some of our rust belt beauties and see who wins the best in show award and the slimmest figure award.

Yep, a rusty vehicle out here stands out as having come from elsewhere.

My van obviously played in the non-salted snow many times, the frame has surface rust, and there's a pretty good-sized area where some genius boiled over a battery.

To us spoiled Californians, salt is what we shake off our fries.....

As posted above. Salt is the ocean around these parts. I don't think even our few mountain rsorts use salt on the roads because of the lakes...

Not all salt belters suffer from this.


Up here in Canada, in ontario, we are in deep salt belt, however, finding a rust free 20+ year old truck, IS possible

We have THE best kind of Rust proofing there is around, called Krown. Only made in Canada and only sold here.


That stuff is so good, they stand behind their product. They hav a rust guarantee, if you bring in your vehicle, and the vehicle is 3 years old, or newer, it goes on the warranty. If any rust pops up on it, Krown pays to fix it. But you have to have it done every single year, and it's 140$ plus 13% tax for trucks. But worth every penney if you plan on keeping the vehicle!

Just a thought, does anyone sell fiberglass fenders & other body parts for our pickups.

i "think" somebody offers hoods but i think to get everything changed over to F-glass would exceed the value of these trucks by a GREAT amount.

JCWhitney comes to mind with the fiberglass hoods.
I know the cost would go up, but for someone wanting to keep the pickup long term, and guard against rust, and keep up the value.
I mean look at some of these F-series truck on ebay, CL, whatever, that have near new look to them. (original or rebuilt)
But thats all a personal thing.

We have similar products down here in the states, FLUID FILM is one of them, Nox-Rust another. Diesel fuel and ATF are also good substitutes and Ive personally seen he difference a lil oil can make(enough so that I spray my vehicles down every fall with a mixture of atf and gear oil). But even vehicles that are sprayed yearly wont compare to a vehicle that has spent its life in a dry arid climate that doesnt spread salt such as Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, etc.

Salt + moisture kills, and there is virtually no way to stop it completely. If you have a nice clean vehicle in the salt belt, the best bet to KEEP it that way, is to put it away for the winter and wet months.
