A 500hp 6.9 can be done but it would cost more money than I would be willing to spend. My 87 back when it was running right several months ago did 309hp on my shops Dynojet with a Hypermax turbo and the 7.3 pump on it timed to 1.5* ATDC with a lumy probe. I'm sure if I wanted to spend several thousand more on mods and machine work I could do the same. I will remind people IDIs can make insane horsepower if done right. They won't be reliable but they will make insane power. If anyone thinks I'm joking check into the 7.3 Hypermax made back in the day. I think I remember it made well over 1000hp. I'm sure there is someone else around who remembers that monster.
Yea I'm sure most of us know about it and know it can be done, but thats some serious coin. And some guy posting an idling vid on youtube doesnt sound like a prime candidate. This is the truck you are thinking of
That doesn't look like the one I remember but it has been a few years since I saw any pics of it. The insane number on the engine are what stuck with me the most. It was one of the reasons I always like the Ford IDI beside the fact it was the only real diesel engine in the trucks back then. I know Dodge and Chevy had diesels also but neither engine was in an actual truck. I've seen numerous 10yard dump trucks with 6.9s in them from the early 80s. In fact the first dump truck I ever drove was a big International with a 6.9 in it.
