I have a 7.3 engine out of a 89 F250 which uses the V Belt setup.
There are no accessories IE, Alternator, AC Compressor, Vac Pump etc...
so no belts to help hold anything, it`s just free wheeling.
I have the Special Wrench to knock the big nut loose, .....

I been searching on Google to see what I can find, but the usual stuff is
the engine is in the vehicle and everything is still connected.
I found a couple YT Vids that are interesting.

What have you used on these IDI`s?
Is there some magic Fairy Dust I need?
This engine is sitting a tire on the shop floor.

The fans mounted on the water pump, stopping the piston would have no effect

You can try and fashion a strap wrench from an old fan belt. Try feeding the belt through a box wrench. Use this to hold the pulley. For the fan clutch use a large crescent wrench, and hit it with a big hammer. This may require 3 or more hands to accomplish, and gloves may be called for to save some knuckles.

See that pulley bolt in the picture below? I made a piece of metal shaped in a y and on each end of the y I drilled a hole that would match up to two of those bolts. That holds it.
