Good evening, tomorrow is the first anniversary of Calvin's passing, this is not a celebration thing, it's just a remembrance thing, please post some pictures if you had interaction with him or experiences, and we'll see if we decide to leave it up a couple weeks or forever or who knows.
We as well as many others miss our friend

When I first met him, he came up to my pad to grab a dually bed trailer to stash, we spent a long time b.s.ing.

I think I have a couple pictures, on my desktop computer. I'm at my daughter's now, with my laptop. If I forget to post them, remind me Monday. Thanks.

I think this is an excellent idea, Russ, a good way to remember our true friend.

I have no pictures, but as I get time to look & hunt thru these different forums & links here on OB, looking for info, I stumble up on Calvin with his input. It's just like Calvin is sitting here giving me as well all other OB'ers tips & info.
Actually doesn't seem like a year, nearly can't be a year, but it is!! Thanks Russ.......so sad!!!

First time I talked to Calvin was by phone. Was surprised by the voice, I had seen pictures, and the voice on the phone didn't go with the pictures.... LOL What I figured would be a few minute phone call, turned into a few hours. Every phone call to him was always at least a couple of hours.

First time in person, was at the 2012 Oilburners member roast... er a rally in Michigan. That was the one that was 2 degrees warmer than hell, and 200% humidity..... I walked into His and Corey @Dieselcrawler cabinsite and was welcomed with a smile and a Killians. He told me that if I was gonna stand there and talk, I needed a beer...... spent hours over there talking to them.

I was looking forward to his return trip that was supposed to happen.......

Can't believe that a year has passed. I'm honored to have had the chance to speak with him. Like you experienced, every phone call became hours, we talked about everything even including trucks. The last time we spoke was when I was having mechanical problems with the truck on the way home from Wes's shop. Awhile after, I was trying to contact him and he wasn't answering - to anyone who knew him, this was totally out o character for him, he'd answer on the second or third ring 24/7... I texted Corey @Dieselcrawler and he confirmed my fears...

I first met Calvin back in 2015. I was originally an FTE regular, but when the day came that my truck needed an IP + injectors, I couldn't do that myself and FTE had no resources like the timing registry here. I found the timing registry, and Towcat was the closest member to me. I knew nothing about him, other than that he was an admin here, had a ton of posts, and I could see in his sig he had a fleet of these trucks, so he must know what he's doing. I registered here, PM'ed him, and we made arrangements for me to bring my truck by.

I had no idea I was going to meet such an interesting character LOL

He let me watch as he did the work on my truck. The whole time he's working, we're talking, he's telling me stories, I'm asking all sorts of IDI related questions, and the dude is just an absolute goldmine of IDI knowledge, not to mention general life knowledge. He worked on my truck 'till almost 5 AM, the damn thing didn't want to start with the new pump, so I had to get a ride home that morning and leave the truck with him. A day or two later, I don't know what black magic he used but he somehow got it running. When I went to pick up the truck he invited me to the 2015 Memorial Day GTG, and there I got to meet a lot of the "celebrities" from the Oilburners community. Because of him, and all you fine fellows, going to those GTG's has become a yearly tradition for me.

One memory in particular I'll never forget. When I went to pick up my truck, of course Calvin and I start talking. You couldn't meet up with Calvin and NOT talk to the guy for hours. We're talking about the various upgrades you can do to these trucks, and I told him I was looking in to the Hydroboost swap. I said to him, "so, this is a shot in the dark, but I don't suppose you have a hydroboost brake pedal for an OBS, E4OD truck laying around anywhere, do you?" He paused, thought about it for a second, and replied, "As a matter of fact, I do. And if you can pull it, you can have it." People here would pay through the nose for that piece of hardware, and he simply gave it to me, just like that. It's rare to meet people as kind and generous as he was, I felt like the luckiest guy in the world.

He also did my Dana 60 swap + rebuild. Every time my hydroboost brakes save me from an accident, and every time I make a U-turn that my old TTB would never have been able to do, I always yell out "Thank you, Calvin!" My friends think I'm weird, but my truck is so much better in every way thanks to him.

My brother hated driving me to Santa Clara to meet up with Calvin because we'd always talk for hours, my brother has no interest in cars / trucks or mechanical stuff in general. I explained to him though, when you meet people like Calvin who are willing to share their stories, experiences, and knowledge with you, shut up and listen. There simply aren't many people like him in this world, so listen to what they have to say and enjoy their company as much as possible. And always, ALWAYS, make sure you tell those people that they are appreciated, because you never know when they won't be around anymore. I fucking miss that guy, rest in peace buddy.

This is the only pic I have with him in it, from the 2015 GTG.

Here is, beyond a doubt, my favorite picture of Calvin. I didn't take this one, but I love the sentiment it shows. It's an older picture, taken in 1998. He is with his daughter, who is now half way through college.

I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm the only person with pictures of Calvin. I found another, taken in March of 2012 at one of his Get Togethers, at the shop.

Spent countless hours either shooting the breeze, checking up on him or getting an earful on life in general. I do miss those phone calls as they would never be 5 or 10 minuites long. An hour later we both decided we had crap to do. LOL

And if there was an echo in the background....... Yep he didn't care if he was sitting on the pot taking a crap because he was gonna let ya know if ya didn't figure it out. LOL

Having had the honor to have him make the cross country trek to make it to my rally in 2012 it was great to finally meet him in person.

For those that never got to meet Cal, he was the most honest and blunt person one could ever meet and still miss his witty sarcasm. There was never a sugar coated piece of advice he would offer and wouldn't hesitate to pass along his knowledge be it with trucks or his love of firearms. Sooo many stories that are now memories.

I'm glad I got to chat with him the night before he passed. Chatting nothing more than his favorite animals.... Cats!

Hearing about wildfires in California to this date still anger me in taking away a great friend.

Cal was a great person and made alot of memories with many on the boards and was a wealth of knowledge that many were able to benefit from.

pulled this post from an older thread, i am going to have to search my 2012 rally pics. that was multiple computers and cameras ago.

It has been a few years so forgive me if I got some details wrong. Unfortunately, I have not become known for my stellar memory. My original screen name was Jred, you can see the stunning originality from my regular name of Jared. Here is the long back story to my screen name.

Anyway, this was the summer the rally was in Tecumseh Michigan. This was also the first time Towcat (Calvin) made the long journey across a good bit of the states to attend his first eastern rally in person. The weather smiled on his attendance by shooting the mercury into record high temps and brutal humidity for that whole week. We could see his body was loving the record heat and humidity he was not used to from his side of the world. I think we as a group were making the best of it and having a good time though.

At the family pot luck event I walked up and started talking to Calvin a bit. He was still putting faces to names so when he realized my name was Jared he decided the make it easier on himself by changing my screen name to Subway (this was before the Jared scum bag representing Subway got put in jail). I probably didn’t help myself by making a few smart comments after having a couple of day drinks to loosen up lol. Anyway, when he asked what my screen name was to change my online name my 10w light bulb lit up inside my head and I gave him the screen name diesel4me2 (Chris). I acted upset while trying to stifle my little kid giggles while he went through his computer screen on front of me and changed Chris’s name to Subway.

I soon went outside to were Chris is cooking up the burgers to feed the masses and tell him that Calvin did not like him and changed his name to Subway. To those that have not met Chris he is a great guy, very smart and always quick to help you in a pinch. He is also well above the 6ft mark, has a giant fiery red beard and could fold me up like origami if he wanted to. He did not believe me and told me so in some colorful language until I brought it up on my phone to show him. I sometimes have the bad habit of poking the bear.

    His jaw dropped……

He then proceeded to teach me some new colorful words and go inside and see why Calvin has it out with him when he seemed cool around the campfire where we all hang out in the evenings. He might have also had some suspicions about me being involved somehow since I could not keep a straight face. So…… Chris goes in to talk to Calvin and of course the whole thing comes unraveled. Chris gets his screen name back and I permanently have been demoted/promoted? from Jred to Subway as a reminder to not mess with the Moderators here.

For a long time Diesel4me2 had the tag line under his picture “The original Subway”

So that is how my buzzed smart mouth got me a permanent name re-assignment
