Rear View Mirror Falls Off....

My rear view mirror continues to fall off my windshield. I'm using the glue you can buy at any fake auto parts store. Is there a better glue available??? I'm using all the supplied instructions but this keeps happening... The funny part is this only happens when the wifey drives my truck.... I think the last time she drove the rig was about a year ago ....

I've tried etching the glass before I use that auto parts store glue with success. Adds more surface area for adhesion.

Tell your wife to quit adjusting the mirror!

Go to a windshield shop. They'll have the good stuff. I've had to do that for customers cars here, and the glass shop we work with always takes care of it. They also use an adjustable hood prop rod (like you buy on a tool truck) jammed against the mirror "foot" and the seat to hold it in place for around an hour, so gravity doesn't pull it off while the glue bonds.

Loctite makes the good stuff. Glass is a supercooled liquid, so it moves a little bit (look at the bottom of the windows in an old house). I've used the Loctite kit with the primer a dozen times, never had a problem.

Most men put the mirror where they want it ONE TIME and never touch it again.

Watch women; they are continously fidgetting with the mirror.

They will yank it around and pick something out of their teeth; then, twist it back in place --- not quite right = adjust it three more times.

Five minutes later, they yank it back around to pop a pimple, or check their lipstick, etc., etc., etc.

It does no good whatsoever to install one of those fancy lighted make-up mirrors on the visor; they will never use it and continue to yank around on the rear-view.


Myself, I would devise a bracket much like that found on older/better vehicles and screw it to the roof; better reinforce though, else she will buckle the cab.

The day the rearview mirror fell off my windshield was one of the best in my life, lol That said I have reinstalled mirrors with the auto-parts glue, and it held, but I did sand the glass down some beforehand, and I only glued the base to it at first (no mirror attached yet) and I had it duct-tape in place for a few hours on a hot afternoon. This on a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that the girl uses as an offroad vehicle instead of the nice-handling semi-sports car that it is...

I've just been through this same problem with my wife's Buick (1987 Century Limited with 32,*** miles). I'd glue the mirror on, it would fall off in a couple days. I was using the standard kit you buy at the parts store, following directions carefully.

After the third time I took it to Calvin, who looked at it and said, "Not enough glue. Clean it WELL, put on more glue. When they say use a drop, they mean a BIG drop. Do it again."

It's lasted a good month so far.

Must be a woman thing, as mine tends to use our car as a bulldozer to move rock walls, support culims, etc She asked to use the truck one day and I said no, in fear of whatever she may bump into.

Boy howdy to the lap top... I now have my own all in one desktop made by HP... Its a touchsmart screen and is completely wireless... She hasn't asked to use my stuff.... Yet

I heard that. I have had my truck for 2 years and the only time Ive moved my mirrors is when I have to squeeze into a parking space. I also dont let anyone else drive it

Women will also adjust that seat in a hurry too. I swear the first thing thats gonna wear out on my moms car is her seat motor.

I find i only look in the rearview mirror to see if anything is flying out of my bed. I use my side mirrors more often to check my "donkey"

But I put the mirror way to high up and now my hat holder doesnt work right

Speaking of rear-views falling off, a good friend of mine that is getting quite long of tooth and a little "tetchy" at times, several years ago had a similar episode with trying to get the rear-view mirror to stay glued to the windshield.

He would glue it on; it would drop off a couple days later.

He would try another method; still it would drop off a couple days later.

This went on for probably six months; until, finally, it stuck and stayed; but the trauma he experienced in trying to get it to stick had burned him deep.


After being stuck on there for years, a couple weeks ago, this poor old clumsy guy that runs around with us managed to accidentally brush against the mirror as he was getting out; and, guess what, --- --- it fell off.

My wife is hell on rear view mirrors. In her cars she's got all kinds of mirrors built into the visors, but she won't use the things, she keeps yanking on the rear views and tearing them off , always got to put her makeup on . I used to have customers that did the same thing, and they NEVER wanted to hear the cure for the problem Make sure to clean that glass good with acetone and give it plenty of time to evaporate and then glop on the glue, make sure to press it tight for about two minutes longer than it says to.
