1995 7.3 power stroke. ZF-5, 2WD
518,*** miles and counting.
Pics below.
What exactly does the cup (circled in red) with the screen do? How does it work? Does it slide back and forth in the pocket to move the ball?
Reason I'm asking is mine was dry rotted and while trying to pull it out to inspect it it basically cracked and crumbled on the part that protrudes out where the screen is.
This all started with "fuel filter" light coming on more and more even with a new filter|separator installed. Was also acting like it was starving for fuel and losing power. That led to new mechanical pump thinking low fuel pressure. All the same happened again. 25lbs of compressed air in the feed line from lift pump fixed the problem temporarily. I'm thinking blockage in pickup tube | screens. Dropping tanks to clean and fix today.
Going to be ditching the screens on pickup tube and extending pickup line down. Moving the return line away too. Adding an screw on filter housing before the front | rear tank selector solenoid in hopes of keeping that damn selector working properly.
This is the part in question (in red). The arrow is the part that broke off. Mine did not have a screen. Just a small hole.
Any more advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.
The picture with the green circle is what it inserts in behind the 2 mounting bolts.
Many thanks from NW Florida

Try that. It's working on my end. I just have to click on it.

I believe it's essentially a strainer with a check valve.

I forget how it's situated... Does is sandwich between the bowl and reg? If so, I got rid on it (and the bowl) on my 97 e350 and installed a spin-on filter instead.
