Im going to be running an H1C off a 12v Cummins with a 12cm exhaust housing. So much easier to mount than the Powerstroke setup

Its hard to say how it would act on an IDI. It would be a ton of work to find out it sucks :dunno I'm no turbo expert, but I do know that the PSD's really suffered from ZERO low end boost during those years (OBS). With the stock exhaust housings you had to be really high in the RPM's to generate a decent amount of psi. You can fix that and create a much quicker spool up time with a smaller exhaust housing, but then you build much more boost on the top end--about 35psi depending on engine mods....

I bet it's pretty unlikely that you'd ever be able to make 35 psi with anything close to what an IDI has for fueling. I bet it would max out at 20 or lower. That may not hold true for the higher output pumps such as Mel's moose pump. Honestly we're all guessing how they would act on an IDI but I'd bet with the stock housing low end boost wouldn't be so great. Rkoch used to say he had made some of these setups but for some reason he quit posting here. The only people I know for sure did it was a guy who went by the handle "Woodie" on the diesel stop and flatlander from here. Flatlander used it as part of his compound turbo setup.

I would definitely make the buy for 150, you are getting a turbo. Look at is as a completely custom project going into it and you would probably be happy. You are definitely going to make more boost and the 6.9 will still light that turbo just a little later than a 7.3, With a good down pipe and open exhaust you could probably get it to light better than the stock truck it is off. Included in the buy is the piping so you can hack, cut and weld what you may need from that. For the price I would do it.

Lighting it a little later than a stock PSD would be somewhere after tomorrow. Aside from the mounting issues you could get a .85 exhaust housing from a super duty. That might spool alright.

Ive always wondered if there would be more lag on an idi, the stroke has a smoke free fuel rate until it makes some boost.

My guess would be more lag and more top end boost, however it might actually make boost faster on an IDI since we aren't saddled with the emissions controls that the PSD is that were just mentioned. I'd really love to see someone else do it, as long as it's not my money ;). From what Rkoch and this other guy 91F2504x4 said these things made quite a bit of boost, although 91 was actually using an IH turbo from a DT466. If there is an advantage to this mod, I'd say it would be that it could make the higher boost without choking itself like some of the commercially available turbo kits for our trucks.

Got access to a rebuilt one new in box laying in a garage here for $200... Keep wanting new shiny, but why? I have the 093, and the 401 has a rebuilt turbo, and I have my eye on its replacement... hubba hubba.

you guys are just gonna have to accept that turbos have a usable map just like and engine has a powerband. I personally like a turbo to light later, its a diesel, it has off the line torque. Basically the longer it takes to get a spool lit means more boost up high, and thats where i want the boost. I would prefer a turbo do nothing until 2000rpm and then when it lights kick me in the back of the head and scream up to 4000rpm. Obviously thats my preference and for guys looking for tow power, that type of turbo wouldnt work for you.

With our stock cam we are seeing max hp just past 2000rpm so having a turbo that is making 2psi at idle and opening its wastegate around 2500rpm depending on load is a good choice for just getting some more usable power in those rpm ranges.

id look at putting an HY35 on a 6.9 before a turbo off a 7.3 PSD. and i would never even think about a VGT off a 6 liter or any other VGT because driving a manual through the city already has your hands full, but messing with a manual controller for the turbo would be even more of a pain.

but that HY35 was used on the post 2002 cummins 5.9L. has a 9cm hotside i believe so our engines would have no problem spooling it quickly. and they are wastegated at 18-20lbs of boost. ive found a few in the 200-300 dollar range.
