I finally decided to fix all the power steering leaks. Replaced the pump and hoses. Question I have is on the power steering cap o-ring. Do they have a reason for the cap not being fully sealed? If I put a thicker O-ring on the cap to keep it from spewing fluid all over will that cause issues? Will it blow seals. It took me hours to clean up the mess from the old one. I would really like to stop the fluid from shooting out the cap.

The lack of an o-ring on the cap is to vent the pump. Fluid will not create a vacuum as the fluid level drops.

Just don’t over fill it. Ive never had that issue in 35 years with f working on old trucks.

X2, my 86 doesn`t have an "O" Ring either.
And it does not make a mess. Use the Dip Stick for the proper
fill.

Thank you all, I will make sure it is not over filled. I have not done any driving with it yet after the repairs. Need to tow a trailer this weekend and will see how it goes.

The cap doesnt have an o ring, but there is actually a pinhole in the cap to vent it.

It will spray fluid out of the vent and actually pressurhe cap off if the engine isn't running or the pump isn't building pressure.

I've seen fluid squirt out of the hole in the cap after the engine has been shut off if the fluid has been overfilled. That's an odd sight the first time you see it!

It will also pressure the reservoir enough to blow the cap off and spray fluid if you turn the wheels without the engine running.

This is just a guess but I'm thinking that if the reservoir isn't over filled and it is leaking out of the vent, there is a good possibility that the pump is weak and not moving fluid fast enough.

I always leave my fluid a bit towards the bottom of the stick, has never leaked.

Update,
Thought I should give an update. All is good now, no leaking. I left the cap loose like it was. I also replaced the steering gear box with a blue top. First one leaked from the pitman are shaft. They replaced it and the new one is working great. Nice to have solid steering again. I used a funnel to install the nylon washer on the hose. That worked really well. The advice on this forum has saved me more than once. Thank you.

How long did it take going back and forth with BlueTop?

They sent out a replacement with a couple days. I think shipping ups was 5 days to receive. They also included a return shipping label.
