Hey guys, I may be looking at trading my 94 7.3 IDI N/a for an 86 f350 6.9 turbo. The guy claims that the truck is in excellent shape and the pictures look really promising so far. He has a Garrett turbo installed on it and it has a spotless frame, floors, cab corners, mounts etc, rebuilt C6. Mine is a 94 N/A with an E4od, bed is beat up, cab is clean except for a few spots in the fenders, new bumpers, rotted radiator support, new lift pump, FSS, fuel lines, GPs, relays, filters, coolant, oil, etc. My frame is also very clean. Both trucks have 155kish miles. I am also including a Zf5 and new brake parts.

How does this sound to you guys? What should I watch out for on an 86 6.9?

Sounds like a good trade to me if condition is as you describe (if not rust free, at least no rot or patching required?). You get a much nicer truck with an '86, and a turbo along with it. Personally unless there are a ton of diesel 4x4 ZF5 in your area I'd keep the ZF5 to put in the '86 and throw him a few bucks for the difference if he complains.

What model is your truck? What cab is each truck? What drive type is each truck? Trim level (XL/XLT)? What wheels/tires on each? Those are all major value factors.

Do you do much open highway driving? First thing you're gonna notice about that '86 is that it's a lot "busier" at highway speed without the OD. That, and the '86 truck won't have anywhere near the interior features and isolation from road noise that the '94 has. Seems to me the only things you'd be "gaining" would be the non-rotten core support and the turbo. I'd have to wonder how his '86 would have a core support in that much better shape than your '94, unless the '86 spent the majority of its life elsewhere in the country.

Compound the lack of overdrive with the lack of a torque converter lockup on the C6. The C6 may be bulletproof, but you're going to be screaming at freeway speeds, especially if the truck has 4.10 gears. Unless you only do city driving, I'd lean heavily towards keeping the ZF5 and swapping it in to the '86 if you decide to trade trucks.

Otherwise, as others have posted, unless the '86 is in considerably better condition, I'm not sure what you'd really be gaining other than the turbo. Beyond that, it's a matter of personal preference...both bodystyles have their ups and downs. Personally, for a highway queen, I'd prefer the creature comforts of a newer truck (i.e. an OBS or a brick-nose), but for an off-road rig I'd want the interior to be as bare-bones as possible.

As others have said, post pictures!!

His truck appears to be in much better shape than mine, and I would mainly be using it to pickup car and truck parts, firewood, wont need to do a ton of highway driving. Both trucks are single cab 4x4, his is daily driven and does not appear to have been neglected while mine was used as a plow truck briefly and has not had work done to it in years. Thats a big reason for me to trade, my truck needs alot of tlc work and I can even drive it because the oil cooler is leaking and I have other projects I would rather focus on. I will get some pictures as soon as oilburners lets me upload a picture. My ZF5 is a gasser 460 too, not a diesel, neither type come up for sale around CT very often and they are expensive when they do.

Heh-heh, you have the same bumper....

Hard to tell from the angle, it looks like the '86 has Alcoas from a later truck. And is your truck an F250? If so, the trade would be a step up wrt. the front axle. Yeah, plowing is one of the hardest uses for a truck, so with the exception of the interior refinements, this is looking like a step up.

You'll be ready for some rubber soon, but that looks to be the case with both trucks.

I dunno,,.
My first thought is....
Why would he want to trade me for this truck???
Net pics nearly never show as good in person!

Look from both sides then go look at it.

am I seeing a D60 on the front of the '86?
quite honestly, the physical condition of yours isn't very good compared to his. for him to propose this, he must have some hidden mechanical issues he's not telling about. I'm a very practical person, I don't gamble, play the lottery or bet on horses. I also believe if someone is coming to me with a deal too good to be true, it is. quite bluntly, with your description and the pics provided, I smell a rat.

That looks like a plow bracket on the 86. I'd look it over real good before you trade. I'm with towcat here. Something smells funny. Either he thinks your truck is better than it is or there is something not quite right about his. You can look at it this way. Though. Neither truck is worth a ton of money. The 86 has a KP 60 in it most likely unless it was swapped in. That's worth a grand right there. For me I look at it this way. If the potential parts value of that truck is greater than yours it may be worth it with the understanding that it may explode on the drive home. If it doesn't, then well, you got a good deal. If you absolutely need a reliable DD then unless you know this guy, I wouldn't go this route to get one. You are just trading problems you know for problems you don't know yet. If you just need a sometimes truck, it's less of a gamble because your livelihood isn't dependent on it functioning.

Personally, the Bullnose (80-86) is my favorite body style...... that being said.... one thing I notice off the bat is this truck has the "wrong bed" on it. It has an 87-97 bed on it.... the fenderline is not the correct one for the year of truck. Is this a deal breaker, no, but if it is being sold as a "good original condition", that is not correct......

With everyone else, go over it with an extra-fine toothed comb, and hope for the best.. and expect the worse.... I with towcat.... there is more to the picture than you are being told......

Well this deal might be put on the back burner, he doesnt want to trade until I have the oil cooler fixed which will take some time since I am in the process of moving.
