Interested in gathering some data to graph for a reliability study. Take a minute to answer the poll for your current engine(s). I’ll allow multiple choices if you want to put down historic engines you’ve had.

Poll is: how many miles as your engine lasted before it either died and got scrapped or was rebuilt requiring machining.

My 93 has sub 60? K on the clock, so I gotz nuthin!

My dad's good buddie ran a rotovating service...
His old 6.9 dually had just North of 500k on it by the time he scrapped it.
You could push it in gear on flat ground it had such low compression.

I forget the maintenance history, but he was a "fix it when it breaks "kinda guy!

If you are fishing for tech, on will it last.....
"IF" you can find a Real machine shop person to correctly set the sleeves, and do the rest of the process then it should last like a stock block...
Starting with a cavitation victim all bets are off!

Had a discussion with someone recently about sleeved IDIs. They were saying you won’t see a sleeved IDI with any considerable mileage. I said consider that promar and Justin sleeve all their engines, so they are out there, but what’s the mileage on them? Neither of us have an answer really and I only give strong opinions on something I can test myself hands on. I’ve tried a 0.040” 7.3 and it lasted less than 5,000 before cracking a cylinder. I have a junkyard perfomance build 7.3 that I just got onto my run stand and compression tested today and it gave some impressive numbers. Once I blow this one I’m getting an IDIT from promar so I’ll be able to see how a sleeved does.

You’re last sentence, that was my opinion too. Promar doesn’t seem to care and will take my trashed block as a core. I’d look to see whoever ends up with it how it goes.

Do you want factory builds in this or just rebuilds. If so, I can list 7 different 7.3’s and they all went over 100k from the factory. One over 500k.

All I can talk about is the 7.3 that I'm running in my Blue Truck right now. When I bought the engine in 2013, I was told that it had about 100,000 on a rebuild. I didn't know any particulars on what had or hadn't been done to the heads (exhaust valve guides) so I decided to pull the engine to have the heads gone through in 2017. Since the "machinist" took way too much material off of the heads, I did have to overhaul it again with .015 decomp pistons (I had only .004" clearance on two valves). There was little enough wear in the cylinders that I had them honed and just put new rings and pistons in. The speedometer has never worked in this truck. I'm using a universal GPS powered speedometer so I have no odometer. I'll guess that I put at least 40,000-50,000 miles on it since I've owned the engine. Since I'm still on the same .020" overbore from when I bought it, I'm still counting it as a minimum of 140,000 miles on the overbore. No sleeves were installed in the block. I have no reason to doubt that it will last at least that many miles again.

The 88 had a reman in it I think it had sub 200k on the clock...
The sins of the "prior owners" shall be revisited upon the current one...

All I know is both of mine are over 200k on what I can only assume are factory blocks.

A friend of mine had right around 600,000 on his 6.9 when the body rotted so bad get had to scrap the truck.

Beagle pup 6.9 only had 137k when I sold it last winter. The dump truck 7.3 (rip) had 296k.
88 6.9 has 80k since rebuild, not sure how many before.
87 6.9 (baby blue) has just under 207,900 and counting.
The 93 crew cab 7.3 I am picking up (Shrek) has 205k and counting.
85 6.9 spare motor has 160k.
Other 85 spare 6.9 has (supposedly) 40k since rebuild, with I believe 300k before.
As far as I know, all of the motors are original.

Like Chillman said, I knew a guy who claimed that he had over 600,000 miles on his 6.9. His income was from delivering campers (or some other type of trailer, I can't remember at this point) from where they were built in Utah to a town north of Topeka, KS. Ha said that he had well over 400,000 on it when he discovered that the bellhousing (four speed manual trans) had a crack in it so he parked the truck. He bought a brand new 2000 Dodge with a Cummins to replace it. After being back at the dealership for repairs for 8-9 months out of the first year that he owned it, he finally told them where to shove that Dodge. He said that he drug the Ford out of the weeds, had the bellhousing welded up, and started driving it again. I want to say that he was around 630,000 miles the last time that I talked to him.
