OK, I said for IDI, because I don't want this to become some kind of full fledged biodiesel conversation that belongs in another forum. I'm gonna buy one of these.... http://www.homebiodieselkits.com/hobikit.html I'd be interested to know if anybody has run biodiesel in their IDI, and what the gotcha's are. I'm tired of $3.17 a gallon, and so it's time to do something serious about it. WMO doesn't smell good. I've done the math, and this system will pay for itself in 5 months, assuming I get my "crude" for free. That's a pretty dang fast ROI, and that's for one truck alone. I have 3, and maybe soon 4.

Mel,

I have looked at those kits before and they sure are nice - pricey up front but as you said (and I've done a cost analysis it myself) that it will pay for it's self pretty darn quick. Now I've done some reading on the net on some of the bio fuel forums and the kit sort of gets a bad rep because of the use of plastics and the thought that it's not a long term type of thing - but saying that and working in a plastics factory we use tubs just like that all over the plant to hold various chemicals that aren't all that friendly to the skin that don't leak and hold up for years... The other complaint that I have heard is that it does not heat the oil so they say you don't get consistant results (quality fuels) because of the lack of heat. But with that said talk to JD Kline down in Florida as he has been brewing his fuel with no heat for a while for his IDI and is doing just fine with it - I have talked quite a bit with JD about his system as I have been the process of building a home brew "Appleseed" set up that Girl_Mark has in her book but sadly I have been lazy and have just been mixing filtered WVO 50/50 (sometimes 60/40) with diesel because well frankly it's cut my fuel costs in half doesn't require much work but with the on set of winter I'm starting back at my project "**** Lab" as I call it in the garage. I would be interested in seeing you get this and become the test rat so to speak for our group...

You know I love ya Mel but someone has to first so why shouldn't you do it...

Mel,
I have been doing a lot of research on the topic over the last year. What I have found is about the same as Travis. Stay away from the already built units. Buy Girl Marks book and build an Appleseed processor. It will be less expensive and make better fuel. For a man of your abilities it will be easy to make.
Here is a page with a lot of info and links.

No!That kit is a total Piece of junk.Trust me.EVERY hard core biodiesel maker flat will tell you it is junk.Leaks,no provisions to heat the oil(plastic so again, unsafe to heat!),and way over price. If you want a true proccessor you can build one for what shipping alone would cost you on the over price bomb using plumbing parts and a Electric Water Heater(Look around, you can get them free at times).

Well the problem for me is that I just don't have the time to roll my own. Or let's just say that the time to do it is too expensive for me. So far what you all are saying is B100 is just fine in the IDI, which is all I wanted to hear. This manufacture offers a heating kit, but I don't know if I'll need it. My plans are to build a small concrete pad and a shed to house this apparatus. That will take enough time as it is.

Mel,
I have been running B100 (purchased locally at fuel distributor) on and off for over a year. I say on and off because it does take a little more hassle than just pulling up to the pump. They currently just have it in bulk which requires someone at the distribution place to come out and turn on the pump and meter. I too get tired of the high prices of fuel and choose to go through the extra hassle to buy biodiesel in principle alone it it worth it as it usually isnt much cheaper to buy if road tax is included.
In a years time the same distributor opened up a card station where I can pump B20 myself, which makes getting biodiesel a lot more convienient and B20 or 20% biodiesel and 80%on road #2 diesel is a good blend. I quit running biodiesel last year during the winter months due to the natural hard starts with the ole IDI but it was also because I couldnt control myself from mixing more than 50% biodiesel or higher. This coming winter with the convience of B20 at the pump I am going to continue running it throughout the winter since it is preblended and a nice percentage to run. I will keep you posted as to how that works out this winter.
OK enough with stories, to answer your specific question, I have been running biodiesel (B100 to B20) for 2 years (7.3 IDI turbo) with no problems and 2 friends of mine have started using it in their IDI's (83' 6.9L and 86' 6.9L )with no problems.

Ok i see your point, a kit would be the way for you to go? but you may be able to find some one close to you that could help you get set up for alot less money and split the other cost too? sort of like a co-op? just a thought, it has taken me almost 2 yrs with only spending money as i have it and then my truck problems but when i get done i'll be saving money? I almost bought the kit but found those 80gal hot water heaters (propane) for $20 plus i can do most of the plumbing my self and have alot of that stuff. but just like you say TIME is the most $$$$. good luck and keep us posted.

how about these kits?

I've been making and running b100 & WVO in my 93 for about a year now. All-in-all about 15k miles. My advice, and you will find this same opinion across the board, do not buy a "ready made" setup that contains any type of plastic. Neither PolyEthalene or PolyPropalene (sp?) are good for the biodiesel process.

Is the link for plans for a processor that I use, made almost 1000 gals with it so far, and is pretty cheap to construct.

My IDI runs smoother and quieter on B100 and WVO. No modifications required for B100 during the warmer months. Blending required other times of the year, but keep an eye on the fuel hoses and a spare fuel filter and filter wrench and run all the B100 you can make.

Another good link for all things BioD or WVO/SVO

I've made a few hundred gallons of bio-d
pretty easy to make once you get the hang of it.
I still make some with the oil thats too nasty for my veg oil tank.

I hate to say it, but I'm gonna loose *alot* of respect for someone who can take apart a motor and rebuild it, but spends $2000 on a premade kit to make biodiesel in.

my bio-d reactor cost maybe $100. and It's all steel and iron, none of this plastic junk that'll melt and dump 50gallons of oil in your garage.

mcmaster.com for the plumbing
notherntool.com for a pump
Home Depot, craigslist, freecycle for a heater
Not sure on a tank yet.

Appleseed doesn't sound too bad to me.

I have been running B-20 in my IDI here in Chattanooga and the truck runs good and I buy it for about 10 cents a gal cheaper then Dino. If I had the room I would be making my own. I agree we should get together in out local area's and set up a good system to be able to process enough for all involved.
