All I can say is, I hope you guys running those setups don't drive in the rain or run through intersections with standing water in them. That has been the death of more diesel cars than I can count with those kind of intakes THe story is always the same on those things, I hear, Look at my cool new intake... then a few months later its: do you know where I can get a new engine
These things may be a little higher off the ground, but it's still playing with fire.
The factory air boxes have well placed water drains in them and so do the ATS air boxes. I would assume that Banks and Hypermax would have followed suit.
Aside from the fact that as previously mentioned, they are just drawing hot underhood air, where you would be much better off with a regular air box and a Hypermax cowl induction. Those things really put the extra air in and drop your EGts dramatically

I myself dont like the open element design, like said all it does is draw hot air in, a cowl induction or ram-air is ALOT better

That's the CDR...functions like the PCV valve on a gasser. I would honestly like to run it to a catch can or something, because it sends a bunch of oil into the intake. Plus my CDR boot has a big split in it and it blows oil all over the place.

The reason your getting all that oil thru the CDR is because it doesn't have a baffle under it like when the CDR is in the valley pan which has a baffle under it. Lots of oil splashing around under that valve cover.

This is how I did mine (Soup bowl gone). Using a 4"X 8' drier vent and ell (at the filter), don't stretch it, that gives it a smooth surface inside. At the intake horn I used a PVC 3"X4" reducer, put a bead of RTV on the 4" end for a seal, use a couple of tabs to fasten it to the horn. The filter (largest one AZ has) last pix, cut holes in the rad brace for air flo. Zoodad I think they call that. Works great on my "90".

Meh, I'm not that worried about water. I had the same kind of intake (albeit inside the fenderwell) on my thunderbird and it was a whole lot closer to the ground, and I never had any problems with water.

Like I said, I want to put a box around the filter, eventually...a couple people are selling boxes from Powerstroke cold air intakes on ebay, might just buy one of those.

I'll take a home brew open element filter over the factory NA air cleaner any day! After all, the factory air cleaner is the one that hyrolocked the Lady Moose. Not one of MY setups.

I think if you have a diesel on the dirt roads often, you can kill the engine and turbo. Got a buddy who wokrs for a dealership and was asking me about my setup. He warned me against the K&N because of some of the trucks he had to fix. One company, 14 trucks. 7 new turbos and 7 new turbos and engines. All with the k&N. I want to find a good one and he said to look for the factory 6.0 setup. He said they were the best. I can add it behind me battery and go into the SC from there after it is done being N/A.

I think the OP was referring to something like this, Ive been running it for quite a while. That said its very open to debris (mud) and power really drops once the engine gets up to temp. I plan to change it out to a ghost tube style one of these days.

You should put the stock air clean back on, and turn it around backwards to were its sucking air in right next to the firewall that way when you get in the mudd the fan cant sling mudd or water in the intake
