When I first got my truck I put a tube on the intake neck and run dryer vent to a spectre air filter I had layin around. But I took it off cause it wasnt puttin in enough air. You need a big filter for this job

I done the something with the biggest spectre filter I could find. Still not enough air factory style Is way better with soup bowl and restrictor removed.

so with my truck with the turbo, i was told that if i took that big air box off and put a 4 inch hose or so and on the end of it i would put a filter on it like your talking about... that wouldn't help? in fact it would hinder it?

This is what I did with mine...at some point I want to make a box around it, just haven't gotten around to that yet.

Just make sure it doesn't get H2O in the intake or you will have a bent rod at best.

So that thing that splices into the tube connected to the air filter... what is that connected to on the drivers side of the motor? that little round thing... how important is that? what does it do

That's the CDR...functions like the PCV valve on a gasser. I would honestly like to run it to a catch can or something, because it sends a bunch of oil into the intake. Plus my CDR boot has a big split in it and it blows oil all over the place.

I meant get rid of the whole factory set-up and run the same type of filter but without the air crap surrounding it.

I wouldn't run it. To much hot air to be pulled from the engine compartment. You need to pull cold air in. With your truck being n/a I would install a Hypermax intake. Also the rain will drip right down it, all my idi's that I've had would have water on top of thier air boss after a rain or wash.
