open the oil fill and take a sniff and see if you smell burnt wiring.there is a problem with the dead side of the engine.the IDM will shut down the whole bank of cylinders to protect itself from being burnt up.you cant always tell if the VC gaskets are good or not till you pull the covers and check both sides of the connections.ive seen them completely melt the inside connectors and the outside connectors look perfectly fine.will almost gaurantee that you need under VC harnesses and gasket on the dead side of the engine.and while you are replacing those make sure to replace all 8 glowplugs as thats the reason the gaskets and wiring burn up.

do they just wear out or do they get too much of a load on them and short, then melt?

Theres more power goin through them than you think. Plus the vibration from the motor itself dont help much. :smoke:

vibration has nothing to do with it.glowplugs are a controlled direct short circuit just like the heating element in electric stoves and dryers.when they die they either completely short out or burn out and create an open circuit.when they short out they melt the wireing and gaskets.

this is only a psd issue right???

YUP!

IDI's do however suffer a similiar ailment....the steel lines from IP to nozzles will break off at the ends if the rubber line clamp blocks are not installed or are worn out!
