It all helps :D . I'm having fun learning about the beasts. I love the torque these motors put out and I'm already getting better gas mileage than I was with my 1/2 ton with the 350 in it, and which the trans has gone out for the third time now!

What diff did changing the inj pump make? Did you change the injectors also?

Do these pumps tend to leak? It appears I have fuel leak on top somewhere!

Also does the torque on certain bolts have to be checked regularly? I changed the head gaskets and some of the bolts on the pass side where not even finger tight!

The 6.0 is suppose to have more power with LESS emissions. It's also suppose to be quieter. Thats why Ford went to it. Too bad they didn't give it a real world test though. They'll just let the first 100,000 customers who plop down $40-50k for a new truck find out what lasts and what doesn't. Thanks Ford -cuss -cuss :backoff :backoff

I'm hearing the same thing from the Tbird guys - taking a good well rounded car - a little underpowered - and going retro with it just to seal its fate cookoo ! And now the Mustang has nearly the same size specs as the 89 - 97 Birds.

The new T-birds are nice cars. More luxury than sporty. They are also very small and expensive. I can barely fit in one with the top up, and I'm just 6', 205 lbs. The expense, I believe, is what killed it. The 94-97 T-birds with the 4.6 are the best, IMHO.

If your talking about the new 6.0 powerstroke motor being smaller your right. Its a completely differant psd motor. The turbo has a multi vane setup and the heads have 4 valves per cylinder. It will really pull a load but.... Its still all electronic under the hood. I'm told all the psd motors injectors are powered by 120 volts!!! Special color coded wires alert you to this hazard. P.S. All the injectors are under the valve covers on the psd but not on the idi motors.

the 6.0L injectors are only powered by 48 volts but the 7.3 was 120 volts. dont forget the glowplugs are also under the valve covers

Ouch! Harsh. Usually we just say "Welcome to the site!" :D The problem with the 6.0, is it is already maxed out from the factory. If you chip it, it's a question of when, and not IF you will destroy it. Our IDI's can make a lot of power too, it's just that the changes needed to get the numbers up higher than 100HP more are pretty extreme.

Looking at some other threads it seems that adding a turbo to a 180k + engine is not recommended. I've got some time before I'll really need the extra power to bet up the mtns in NC, so I'm saving my pennies - check that - my fives, so that I can rebuild the motor w/ the turbo on it. Also want to get a gear splitter for it!

Here in the swamps the truck is great the way it is (as long as you stay on the asphalt) but its the mtns that have me concerned!

I'm not so sure on that one...IMHO if you replace the head gaskets (and, ideally, upgrade to studs), you'll be just fine with adding a turbo. You SHOULDN'T need to do the bottom end...the bottom ends on these trucks are pretty stout. :cool

Just my $.02...FWIW, I replaced my head gaskets and added a turbo to my truck at about 220K miles, and I'm at 228K miles with absolutely no trouble whatsoever (yes, I don't drive my truck much :( can't afford to)...

Good to hear  . I've been leaning towards doing the gear splitter first anyway so that's good news. Both of those are further down the list right now anyway - gotta fix the hoist first, redo the bed, install the AC unit I have, upgrade the exhaust, tool boxes, paint job...I want, I want, I want!

There is nothing wrong with adding a turbo at any age. Added stress on the engine is only going to accelerate a problem you might be working towards (new head gaskets mostly) anyway.
