...to the site and to diesels!

I looked the site trying to find the answer and it's now starting to drive me crazy, what does "IDI" stand for

Indirect Inject

The older model Ford Diesel Is IDI the power stroke is called a DI ( Direct Inject)
IDI Diesels are mechanical and DI's are electronic.

Navistar is also know as International which is who makes fords Diesel engines. ;Sweet

Thanks!!

How do the 2 engines compare. Are the powerstrokes a better engine or is it just a catchy name and more bells and whistles??

The power stroke has more power and torque, But they are also all electronic so much more exspencive to repair. The IDI is mechanical nothing electrical to mess up. the power stroke can handle more heat also.

Others will chime in with more info.

When we picked the truck up last summer(in Indiana) it would overheat once at 70mph, haven't had it back out on the highway since getting it home to see if it still happens.

You'll start a fight with those kind of words :D they both have their pros and cons

IDI pros mechanical injection so no sensors telling a computer how to run the motor easy to work on reliable and parts are cheaper
cons most were not turbocharged not a lot of aftermarket performance parts possible cavitation issues

PSD pros better blocks all were turbo'd lots of go fast goodies
cons as mentioned lots of sensor to go bad and parts are $$$

Better depending wich angle you look at it. You can get more power out of it, but you'll have to spend more too. Not to forget you'll have to go with a scanner when it dies on you some where far from a shop or you will have to get towed home. That will not happen with an idi like mine that drove Me home for 5 months after it started to show the alt was going south. You will find they are much easer to work on, but lets not start a war here, I know some some evil computer controlled member may be reading this. LOL

:hail IDI :backoff

NO intention of being disrespectful, I always wondered why and how the Powerstroke came into existence.

Is the PS still a International engine or is it all Ford?

The Powerwstroke came out in 94 1/2. It is still a 7.3 International motor, but completely different than the IDI's. Like the others said, Computer Controlled, Injectors for each cylnder, lots of electronics.

In 94, you could get 3 Diesel Motors

7.3 IDI
7.3 IDI factry Turbo
7.3 DI Powerstroke Turbo. All Powerstrokes (PSD) came with turbo's
If you got a PSD in 94, you could only get it with a 5 Speed Stick, then 95 on up you could get stick or auto.

Hope this helps a little,
Darrin
