I never let mine go the add mark, and it burns a lot of oil (didn't use to).
Maybe I should see how low it will get before it stops using...or burns the worn out **** up.

I would think that, with the high volume oil pumps that we have, there wouldn't be much oil left in the pan when running. Maybe I'm wrong, but with the oil cooler, the oil fro the top end, and even with a turbo, it would take a while for the oil to get back into the pan. Yes it drains back faster when hot, but it still only drains so fast. Now raise the RPM's to 2000 or 2500, and the oil leaves the pan even faster, still only draining back so fast. I wouldn't run mine all the time at the add mark, but that's still the bottom of the "safe" range. I just wouldn't let it get any lower than that.

Hot/cold, I'll have to check our manuals. But there's no way you'd get any meaningful level reading from ANY engine that's _running_. You at LEAST have to shut it down and let the oil drain into the pan.

Not sure on the 6.9/7.3 IDI, but I know on the 6.0 PSD, per the Owners Manual, Ford says 20 minutes after a Normal Operating Temperature shutdown.....

You must be registered for see images attach

My guess is the IDI would be a similar recommendation.....

My truck was almost 2 gallons low one time.. that was a few years ago during a drive when a unexpected oil leak occurred drove many miles really low without knowing it. This was a few years ago and motor still going strong with added turbo and many miles since then

My 1992 IDI used a quart of oil and it would stay there for a long time. If I added the quart back, it would use it quickly. So I agree with chris142.

Yup very common on these engines. When I first got mine,I didn't understand where the last quart kept going lol.Read about this.Stopped topping it up and sure enough,no more needlessly feeding it oil all the time.
