There is no ECM. That's one of the things that makes an IDI an IDI. You do have a TCM, and it is probably powered by a relay. Your owner's manual will tell you for sure. But nothing electronic can possibly make a mechanical speedometer fail. The square drive is simply the cable core. you need to check the GEARS where the cable enters the transmission.

It spins ok.. I was gonna put it on a drill and see if the speedometer moves.

Was a gear supposed to come out with it, or am I supposed to try to look in the hole?

You are missing the drive gear. You found your problem.

Gotcha. Pardon my ignorance here, I have never had to deal with this issue before.

I can't seem to find the gear on rock auto or oreilly, all that comes up is the cable, and it doesn't appear to have a gear on it.

Will I have to take the extension housing off to fix this?

Not if the internal ring gear is there.
Try bronco graveyard.
Oh yeah, you do need a specific one according to gear ratio and tire size. But I can't say which one.

You can buy an assortment pack and try different gears to get your speedo as close as possible

Yes you will need to remove the extension housing to get the old gear out. It's in there someplace.:D

I was wrong, the cable had separated from the piece that goes into the housing (where the o ring is)

I got it out and the gear looks good

If I put it on the cable and spin it, the odometer moves.

In guessing that means my issue is something else. Not sure what to check now

I made a quick video. Trying to see if the worm gear is gone as previously mentioned.

The quality is terrible, I can make a better one if necessary. I don't really know what I'm looking for but I don't see anything that would drive a gear..
