The failed gasket was gooey and fell apart when you removed it? It sounds like THAT one may have been home-made from inner tube.:puke: That was on a year old rebuilt IP? Try to find out from the previous owner: 1)Who rebuilt the IP? 2) Did he use any kind of exotic fuels, anything other than good old-fashion diesel?

Well.. Really happy to know its up and running. I have never heard of that gasket ever getting soft or gooey or even torn. As you can se. They are a very thin material. Just keep an eye on it for a week or two. Nothing worse than being starnded on some dak road late on a sunday nite...

Glad to hear it is back on the road. Congrats man.

I agree with Ken, there is something weird about the condition of that gasket........ especially with it being rebuilt not long ago. Makes me want to know the answers to Ken's questions too.

Rob, thanks for the offer. I make take you up on that some day.

I sent the guy a text asking for more info about the rebuilt IP, and I'll let you know what he says. From what I remember of the conversation, the IP came from a local parts house. He claimed that he paid $600 for it. He hasn't messed with the fuel screw that I can tell because the chalky white paint on the upper screw seemed undisturbed and the pieces of the gasket seemed to be similar in thickness to the new gasket. The paint broke apart and came off when I replaced the gasket. He didn't seem like the kind of guy that was into alternative fuels--he was using it as a work truck to haul brush.

He just got back to me. The reman pump came from O'Reilly's and he only ran #2 diesel in it.
