So I spent the weekend in Vista ca to do my new flywheel and clutch. We did everything by the book and it turned out great but although the truck drives and shifts great, I'm getting some strange noises.

Sometimes when I step on the brakes, I'm getting a loud grating noise inside the cab, it also does it when I make left turns, or turn to the left on a winding road.
As soon as the truck comes to a stop, the noise stops.

I can also sit idle and turn the wheel full left and get the same noise and it really echoes up through the cab.

I was starting to think that I had gone metal to metal on the front brakes but realized today that like mentioned earlier, if I turn the wheel hard left lock while sitting idle, I get the noise.
This also doesnt happen all the time, just certain times of the day.

I also noticed while driving through the gas station, I was making a left but was also hitting some small dips and the noise was fading in and out with the dips.
It all acts like something in the drivetrain is shifting around to make the sound come and go. If I cant figure it out, I'll have to drive all the way back to Vista this weekend, to have my cousin in law tear it back apart.

Everything under the truck was re installed and tightened to proper specs. My cousin in law is very thorough with his work.

Thanks!

I would take a very close look at the front axle...although it's strange that this cropped up so quickly after doing the transmission work, it sounds to me like it's in the front axle or steering system and not in the drivetrain. How are your ball joints?

Might be worth checking to make sure it didn't get put into any other gear than 2wd. Perhaps a previously unknown issue with the front drive assembly. Certainly not difficult to do. Mine made a clicking noise when engaged before I fixed ALL the U-Joints, and like I said, it's rather easy to not get the shifter setup correctly, especially if you are more focused on making sure the rear wheels turn when you are done. Just another SWAG. :)

The front hubs were probably locked to install the front drive shaft. Maybe they are still locked. That doesn't excuse the noise, but you won't need to redo the clutch.

^^ I could see that since you have had it all apart. Might torque things enough to cause it to touch.

I've checked down pipe, motor mounts, etc. front hubs are unlocked, transfer case in 2-high.

I really think its something in this new clutch assembly. I don't know enough about this stuff to come up with a conclusion though.
I do know that it seems to be at its worst when inertia is pushing things forward, like during braking.

Can't explain why it would do it making left turns though. Also like stated before, sitting still and turning the wheel left will also do it.

I have/had a very similar problem on mine. When you stop, or turn left, it sounds like something really similar. Mine was after my banks sidewinder install. My turbo was hitting the firewall when the truck twisted and flexed.

you Removing the transmission, and reinstalling it, could have allowed the engine to shift around a bit and now something is touching. These old frames and body mounts move around a lot more than I ever expected they would.

You might check the cylinder head to firewall clearance, the downpipe, up pipes, turbo(if ya got one) throttle cable laying on a solid engine piece, clutch hydraulic line laying on a solid engine piece or contacting the transmission while you are in full turn.

Good luck. I bet something got moved enough to rub when the truck flexes or twists. You'll find it.

when you two take a look at it, make sure the trans mount is good and have someone work the pedal while someone else is underneath watching the bellhousing fact to adapter plate. if the trans bellhousing is cracked, you will see flexing there.
good luck.

Ok thanks. Ryan should know what he's looking for.

So this noise was really annoying yesterday and today. I was stopped on a steep hill, facing downward and this thing was making all kind of racket. I talked to my cousin in law who installed the clutch and he said there is a possibility that the flywheel is rubbing the back of the engine.
I'm going to remove the inspection cover tomorrow and take a prybar and see if I can get any big movement out of it.
He said something maybe about a thrust bearing letting the crank move back and forth too much?
This might make sense since it only happens when braking, or the truck is facing downhill. Also does it on left turn, the harder the left, the worse it is.

Is it worse than the other day? All I heard was gear clash for the trans, but maybe I wasn't listening for the right noise...
