In the interest of collecting info in this thread What years of ZF5 work? I think I have seen one behind a 95 powerstroke. Will those still bolt to a 6.9?

Thanks for all the comments and props! I'll try to get some more pictures of the truck soon, it looks much better with a Dana 60 under the front end.

Just picked up the driveshaft over lunch. $126 for a re-tube with new u joints install. If anyone in the So Cal area needs a driveshaft made, Driveline Specialties in Azusa has never done me wrong. One man operation in a little shop- the kind of old school guys you dont think exist any more. Always done a great job on all of my trucks and my friends trucks.

Should have it rolling tonight! I'll let you guys know how it drives.

Got it going last night. Aside from the fact that I cant get the clutch to bleed all the way, it drives awesome. So nice to be able to use all lanes on the freeway now. Thing feels like it pulls harder and isnt struggling at all. Its amazing how much torque these motors have, never realized it until now.

So... any tricks to getting the clutch bled? I bled it like normal, drove it around for an hour and no dice. Had to constantly pump the pedal to get enough disengagement to shift gears. Just keep bleeding and bleeding until success?

Like previously stated, they are a *******. I bled mine about a dozen times before I could get the thing to go into 5th gear. Once in 5th, I jammed it down into 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st, then just drove the thing. After about 1/2 hour of driving, it worked all of the air out. I would think that after an hour of driving around, it would be bled by now. Might want to check that the MC is actually getting depressed far enough; worn out bushings in the clutch pedal mechanism could be a contributor and are a real common in these things.

Very cool swap - so a 1356 or a 1345 will bolt to the ZF? IIRC 1356's were found under half ton trucks and Bronco's correct? I've got, what I think, is a 1345 in my 86' 1 ton and I've got an electric shift 1356 out of a Bronco with a fixed yolk. Will I be good to go for a spedo cable if I use the 1345 that's in the truck?

I used the 1345 that was already in the truck. It bolts right up to the ZF5, and since the speedo cable plugs into the transfer case, you're speedo cable situation would remain the same. The transfer case is the only piece left of my truck's original drivetrain; I kept it because the 1345 has a slip yoke on the back of it, and my donor truck's 1356 had a fixed yoke. Using the 1345 allowed me to use the existing driveshafts without modifying them.
The big difference between the 1356 and the 1345 was the shift linkage. I used the trans hump cover and linkage out of the donor (89 7.3/ZF5), which required cutting a hole in the floor for the TC shifter and making 1 piece of the linkage myself - which was just a piece of 3/16" flat bar with holes in each end.

Very good to know - thanks man. I love that I won't have to mess with the spedo cable.

As far as I know, 1345's were used in the earlier trucks and replaced with the 1356's. I think ford used 1356's in everything from broncos to F350s.

I'll just keep driving it, most of the time was spent on the freeway (in the fast lane :D) so the clutch wasnt getting used much. I'll be sitting in traffic tonight so it'll get a workout

Im beginning to thinnk either my master or slave is bad. I've got about 50 miles on it, much of it stop and go, and still no dice on the clutch. If I pump the pedal a million times, it feels somewhat decent but not as good as it should. After driving in one gear for a while, though, the pedal goes away and i've got to pump the pedal again to get it to shift. I bled it with my roomate the other night for about 15 minutes straight as well.

Another neat thing is the water temp while cruising on the freeway is about 15 degrees lower than before. Overall the truck runs a lot cooler. That C6 must have been pumping a lot of heat into the cooling system.

Nice job. ;Sweet A couple questions for ya since Im getting close to doing this in my 86/T-19 pickup.

1. You mentioned you got a floor board plate from the junk yard....was it neccessary and what year was the plate out of?

2. I already have the Napa solid flywheel clutch conversion kit, but how was the ZF's roll over noise? Or was it a problem? Also, what fluid did you use?
