Hello to all. Purchased my first diesel in May - a 1989 F350 RC dually pickup w 5spd. Also got a 1987 F350 4x4 chassis cab parts truck as part of the deal. My plan to is convert the '89 to 4x4. The '87 frame is too far gone to save. When I bought it, the '89 was extremely hard to start (basically had to use ether, I know, I know...) and the exhaust was smoky white with fumes that would water your eyes, but I drove the truck 35mi home from point of purchase. It was very lazy and the engine would almost die when coming to a stop. In my quest to fix the starting and smoking problems, and after reading many posts on this site, I decided I had to verify timing. To make a long story short, the IP timing gear was off 180 degrees. I corrected that and now the truck starts great and has much more power, better drivability, and no smoke from the exhaust. So, for those who think an IDI won't run 180 degrees out - believe me, they will. I may eventually post a write-up with more details about the fix, but for now I'm very happy to have a usable 1-ton truck. Previous owner installed or had someone install the following new parts; IP, lift pump, injectors, glow plugs, glow plug controller and batteries. Obviously, they didn't really know what they were doing. I'm sure the previous owner would be sick to know what was wrong with the truck and how I repaired it....The truck has 143k mi on it and needs paint but is not a rust bucket.
