I have a MF 30b industrial tractor. It has been sitting for about 7 years. Last month I had the starter turning the engine over. I dont have the key so I was jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver. Today I tried to do the same thing and got one click and now nothing. Before I look for a new starter Id like to make sure this one is bad.

If the starter is bad shouldnt the solenoid still click?
And if the solenoid is bad shouldnt I be able to bypass the solenoid and get it to crank?
Neither of these things are happening. What are the chances that both the solenoid and starter break at the same time?

I tried tapping the starter. Please help!!

Your batteries maybe gone. Check them with a volt meter to make sure you have 12 volts or more. It is more common to find bad batteries rather than a bad starter.

Had me stumped for awhile because everything check out good with a volt meter. Noticed the ground strap getting hot. Took it off, wire brushed and starts just fine now.
