Loss of power pulling load

my truck pulling a tractor couldn’t hardly make it up a hill today the rpms was around 2500 and wouldn’t shift right and didn’t ever make it over 40 mph it was billowing black smoke any ideas would be appreciated

We need a little bit more information. Do you have a turbo or is your engine N/A? How steep/long of a hill was it? How big is the tractor? How heavy is the tractor? If you don't have a turbo, the tractor was fairly heavy, and the hill was steep, I think this sounds normal.
