Since new in 1988 I've dealt with the usual leaking return lines/O rings but, this time I can't figure where the fuel smell is coming from and air is getting in.
After several days of sitting, it loses prime... fires then dies... crank, crank, crank and fires and runs fine.
I smell raw fuel but can't find the leak.
Return lines/o rings dry, fuel filter/water seperator dry,, lines going to and from fuel tanks dry, fuel tank selector valve dry, but I smell raw fuel. I even changed the lift pump... same dilemma.

Sure does, no leaks from there.
For the amount of raw fuel I'm smelling I would think locating a wet spot would be easy... not this time.

Look at the injection pump closely. Throttle shafts, weep hole, and where the advance arm pushes that pin in on the left side.

Well, the valley pan was wet but I know it's also coming from under the air cleaner... kinda oily if you know what I mean.
No visible leaks anywhere but... 'possibly' the Olive going to the IP is failing.
I cleaned everything off with brake clean and put paper towel under the IP and will check it tomorrow.
Question... who sells the Olives for the hardline???
I already have return line kits but no Olives.
Back in 2011 our once Oil Burners 7.3 hero 'Mel' rebuilt my original IP to Baby Moose pump standards, I installed it and I went to his home where he was kind enough to set the timing... hopefully no internal seal went bad.

Don't have my diesel book with me... return line to tank: am I guessing there's a 3/8th Olive in that nut? Since new I've never touched it.

Thanks, how long ago did you get them?
Also... you have the 6.9 I have the 7.3 so I'm guessing they may be two different sizes?
*5/16" Vibra-Loc - McMaster-Carr Item 50385K83 on the hardline from Filter head to IP.
*3/8" Vibra-Loc - McMaster-Carr Item 50385K84 on the hardline from Lift pump to Filter head.
Nope. They're the same size.

Yes there is. There also is another olive at the other end of that hard line if there's a nut on top of the IP. Both are 3/8".

Six Olives $36.00 three -3/8ths and three -5/16th's.
Still haven't found the leak but, hopefully when this colder weather hits it will show itself as a bad Olive or return O-Ring etc. And NOT in the IP.
