Replaced an IP yesterday. As I was torquing the 3, 12 point IP to IP gear mounting bolts, I was thinking about how I have never used loctite before on any of the pumps I have replaced. Never had an issue, but thats besides the point. Is it a good idea to put some blue loctite on them???

Thanks,
Kevin

Well its not a bad or good idea. It will help keep the bolts tight but you have to wash out the oil thats in the drive flange and off th bolt threads. If you torque those three bolts to the proper torque of 25 lbs they wil not loosen up. At least I have never read here where one has loosened up. Mel taught me how he torques them at the 2009 rally. He has a combo wrench and uses his thumb pressing till it hurts. That trnslates into the correct torque because he has done so many of them. Its just a feel one gets after doing so many. I've probably done 20 or so pump changes and I feel better using my torque wrench. Actually I test the wrench by using another torque wrench I trust. Would I tell you to use loctite on these.. No but I would not tell you not to either.

I dont really see those bolts as a problem area for loosening over time. I've never come across any that were loose and I've changed a few pumps, one was an original at 130,000 miles.
I've never really fooled with locktite but if it made it hard to remove those bolts, I wouldnt want it on there.

I've only heard, seen a post where one bolt had backed out on a guy. That was on the TDS. Yeah, if your paranoid about it, clean both bolt and IP threads with brake clean spray, then use the Green Loctite. Red or Blue is to strong. ;Really :D

Thanks folks. Yeah I have never had an issue with them but just thought I would double check. Its not something that one would want to come loose LOL

i don't think its needed.however those who haven't used the stuff, should not instill fear about it to others either lol.it's not jbweld.not even the red stuff.when you loosen something that has been red lock tite on it,it simply makes it turn firm and real gritty/sticky if you will.it doesn't make it feel extra torqued and or clued fwiw.
it's not stuff anyone should fear using is my point.

I had my IP bolts back out. Put a ring in the front access cover. I made sure to torque them the last time I put them in. Can't remember if I used blue loctite or not, but seriously thought about it.

Junk is the member I now recal posting about the bolts backing out but never learned why they did that. Loctite makes some good stuff. Personally I would fear useing the product called stud and bearing mount . Its the red 277 stuff. Must add heat to 300 degrees or it will shear off an 11/16 stud. That stuff works great on a bad guys lug nuts. We al know the horrible neighbor or the fool that takes 4 parking spaces and walks off laughing.. Yeah.. Its that guy.

I just checked I believe I put the bolts in that backed out at like 7ft-lbs. I was following mels writeup from the tech archives and it has 7ft-lb in there. Second time I'd done more reading and found Gary saying 25ftlb. Second time around I'm not concerned. Well too concerned. Once bitten twice shy.

I recall something in Mels article about that low torque. Though I thought he had changed it. I know his torque to feel is done off his thumb. Hes done so many of them he has the feel. My hands are much older and his and have lost the loving touch..:angel::rolleyes:
