Hi all...haven't logged on here in years. Sure has changed, for the better--back in the day it was a bit wild.

I have a '92 7.3IDI in a reg cab F-250 4x4 with the E4OD. 229,750ish miles.

Couple things.

1) She is smoking, pretty much all the time. Gray/blue/black. Not lacking for power, starts up pretty good. I've read up on the issues, and done the preliminary check overs and am pretty sure there is some sort of injection pump/injection nozzle issue going on (obviously lol) but without the right tools and time to work on it, I'm kinda at a loss. The injection pump and nozzles are original.

2) OD light is flashing. I'm not grasping the whole process on how to pull the code(s) with a meter. Transmission is original. Fluid is in good shape. Was serviced about 15,000 ago.

If anyone is fairly local to my area of western WA, or knows a "guru" who is, any info or assistance is much appreciated. My truck is just an old beater but she's special. lol

Thanks in advance!

I would bet that your pump and injectors are way overdue for replacement.

I'm not much help on the trans, as I'm a zf guy.

I've got a 92 with an E4OD in it. If your tach isn't working that would cause the flashing lite, also if the speedo not working or jumping around it's the VSS or MLPS sensor. VSS could be covered with metal flacks, pull it and clean it, it's on the rear diff. MLPS is on the tranny.

I'm thinking you're right. This has been a really good truck that has taken abuse up n down woods roads for 20 years. I should probably just change the pump, nozzles, and install a reman trans on general principle, but I'd like to find out whether or not (******' in the wind perhaps) if other fixes are possible.

I haven't noticed the tach acting up, been pretty solid. The speedo, too but I have seen a couple wobbles of the needle once in awhile. I will pull and clean the VSS in the morning. The little orange needle for gear indication broke about 6 years ago...that's not related to anything right?

The local Ford dealer isn't well versed in the IDI engines, and the local diesel shops aren't seeming to be eager to work on a non Powerstroke/Cummins/Duramax pickup. One guy even went so far as to say on the phone "It's 20 years old, time to upgrade." OK, I'll never do business with you again, thanks....

PM type4 with your problems, he might be able to help, I think he's in WA.

Will do, thanks! I may end up working on this thing in my shop. It's been a LONG time since I've had to do major wrenching on one of my pickups...hope I still got good karma lol

Check your brake lights, turn signals includingthe third brake light. Make sure you dont have a bulb out.

The idea of a brake lite bulb being burned out can cause the trans to lock and unlock the torque converter when the lite is supposed to blink. What happens is the bulb filament breaks and grounds out. Then when you use that blinker it grounds out the trans and unlocks the converter as it blinks. Happened to me after an engine rebuild. Really had me wondring what I rewired wrong too till a member here suggested I see which lite was burned out. Sure was an easy fix only costing a bulb and not a trans. No need to think you ned a rebuilt trans but the pump and injecters are shot. They usually last for 120,000 miles. so get more and some get less. Contact typ4 aka Russ for pumps and injecters. Or Mel at Conestoga Diesel in Pa. Hes the owner and a very long time member here. Owns the Moose truck and goes by agnem here. Both Russ and Mel are honest business guys not interested is cheating you. I call them friends and so do many others here and around the world too. they both do international sales.

Any tranny shop can pull the codes. Getting the codes read will make life easier. Otherwise you will be chasing your tail trying to correct the issue.

Well, first things first. TCC clutch issues. Probably will just have the whole thing rebuilt. Wouldn't really make sense to put a new converter in front of worn parts.

Talked to Justin @ IDI...seems like a nice guy. Transmission is priority right now, once that is done I will tackle the engine issues.

The truck has paid for itself probably 20x over...been rode hard, bent, broke, twisted, smashed, and put back together quite a few times. Engine and trans have been great thus far. It's worth fixing....going to put a service body on it over the winter and do some body work to the cab n front clip. May sound like a lot of $$ to dump into an old truck, but this thing has been the best pickup I've ever had, and I've had a lot of them.
