Well its time for me to update this thread. I connected one repaired meter and I was able to check my timing on my truck. So I tried another repaired meter but got a very low degree reading. So I tested all 5 repaired meters. Some would not work. Connect the meters. Press the lower rocker switch and see the digital readings change to all zeros. then the degree reading changed to -20 but the rpm works fine. So I try other magnetic probes and nothing works. Not even the first meter I tsted will reply the same readings even with the smae magnetic probe. I was using number one cylinder hard line and that has always given me trouble so I will try using number 4 cylinder. I took apart on of the repaired meters and found the repair in the same condition I fixed it. So I have more work ahead of me in testing. Sorry for the not so good news but I'm still working on this. I have severl other metrs and can be opened up and hopefully repaired better than what I just did. Damn humidty here today is going up to 98%.. I so hate humidity. It feels like the world is pressing down on my shoulders.

Well I'm still working on these meters. Nothing is fixed yet but I am finding out more and more about them. Still not convinced what al posted is the correct repair but it seems to have fixed his meter. I'm still not sure his idea of a repair is what I should be doing. Seems the rocker switch that tells the meter if you have the magnetic probe or the timing lite pickup in use. So that plug needs to open or close if the magnetic probe is used. When the magnetic probe is not used and removed the plug opens and you press the rocker switch to the timing lite circut. I think the only real way to know what this plug is supposed to look like and its setup function is to buy a new meter and open it up.. Thats $600.00.. Not a possibility any time soon. So I have a message into OTC about helping me fix these meters. Lets see how long it take for them to answer me. I do have their phone numbers too..:sly

Gary,

How do you set your depth of your mag probe? If you do not have a collar, I'd suggest a couple of business cards between pulley and timing tab, then press your probe in till the probe makes contact with the cards and withdraw the cards.

This would give clearance to the tip and should be close enough to sense the groove in the pulley. It was what I did my first time before I realized it was a stop collar and set that depth correctly.

Did you also measure the impedance from the mag probe plug. tip to stem? I got 35 Ohms, what do you get? Might be worth measuring and recording each one, testing with one meter etc.

I still strongly feel that my repair is correct. I've had to deal with these jacks for years in other things and tip contact was a usual issue.

You know the # call if you want/need to.

Al

Ok time for another update on these meters. I have continued working out this connecter issue and what I have found is mine has some corrosion and pitting on the contacts. I cut out the plug that Al has pictured with the pen in the pictures he has posted early in this thread. I went to Radio Shack trying to buy some and they did not carry the 2.5mm size plugs either the male or the female parts. So where can I buy these connecter plugs in the 2.5 mm size.

Great troubleshooting work Al!! ;Sweet

If those jacks turn out to be a problem, you could always do jack bypass surgery. Wifey's laptop computer recently had a problem where the center pin in the power jack broke off in the power supply cable end. You guessed it...jackectomy. I cut end off the power cable, removed the jack from the motherboard and soldered the power cable directly in place where the jack was. Voila, a working computer.

Regarding the timing at 10.3 degrees, that's very aggressive, but my cube van is set at 10.5 degrees and it gets great mileage on the hwy, when I keep the speed around 100 km/h.

I have been in the electronics field a long time and would like to add the following
1. these plugs were used mostly in audio connections but else where as well, but the names mono and stereo apply to discribe the number of contacts used, yours seem to be mono.
2. the mono ones can short to ground with an extra contact when not used, this seems to be the case here with the open and closeing of the contact.
a wiring diagram or a call to the manufacture will solve the question.

You will notice at the end of the VID that it specs lower 9.7 or so, The vid was after checking and adjusting several times.

I managed to see 9.4-9.7 on the previous runs prior to my video so I am confident it was just a glitch in reading. I've checked subsequently as well and I'm comfortable with what I have!

I do thank you for being alert enough to notice and comment as I appreciate that a great deal.

Al
