cold air is best but when your movin its not much warmer than ambient.

IMHO k&n filters are only good in wet climate where dust isnt an issue, i only run mine in the winter, in the summer i run a napa/wix#6637? I heard a story about a guy with a new dodge in texas, the motor was junk after 30k because of dust. granted as i heard it he ran in pretty brutal conditions, that was all i had to hear. BTW in my psd there is NO difference in power same with my tahoe.

I bought my truck used with 80k on it and have the same K&N that it came with. I now have 222k miles on it and still have the same filter. So, I can't answer your mpg question, but I don't believe the filter is guilty of ruining engines!
