How did you change your set up and to what ???

I ditched the Banks box and had acquired the newer style Banks wastegated intake hat from Towcat and hooked it on up.

This setup will be changing since I am installing an intercooler, but it was a fairly inexpensive swap to get me by.

It has worked very well and given the short distance of plumbing from the filter to turbo, one can hear that thing spooling!

The options are wide open from that point, filter size and location.

Hey I think there will be this debate on whether oiled gauze filters can ever adequately do the job that paper filters do or not. Having said that I use an SB oiled gauze filter, so far so good it seems. At least I don't see any signs of the turbo not working such as scary noises or lower boost or more smoke/less power. Also my ATS came with a K&N filter, the compressor wheel was trashed, and it needed a new bearings/seals kit as well. I know icanfixall had SB make a filter for his Banks Sidewinder so they certainly know how to make them at SB for a Banks system by dimension. Some here think all oiled gauze filters ultimately flow too well and shorten turbo life spans significantly. Punkmechanic says he saw this with Vdubs here in FL and with Ford diesels at his current job. That's not encouraging, but if K&N is not doing a good enough job then there would be a lot of bad filters out there. There is plenty of evidence that there IS a problem. The question is, is the problem poor QC at K&N, user error, such as not sealing the airbox properly and.or incorrect cleaning and oiling or is it that oiled gauze just is not nearly as good as paper at filtering air for engines and that they truly do flow "too well" IE a lot of dirt and small abrasives along with all that air.

I put an s&b intake on our f450 power stroke and am real pleased. Every time I take it off to clean it I cant find any dust in the tube. They are an 8 layer filter I think kn is four.

Google SB filters. I figured icanfixall doesn't take chances with his equipment so if it passes his test it most likely is a good product. No hard feelings to anybody here if it doesn't work...it's my experiment too. I've had mine on about 10,00 miles I want to say. I for sure don't think you could see anything through that filter. It looks stout. I remember one member said it's better than a K&N however I could make a better filter than a K&N out of a box of used cigarretes... hahaha

If your NA stick with an after market drop in. I would go with something other than K&N though. I chose to go with a True Flow filter and so far I'm very happy with it.

It just drive me nuts to see these guys who are NA switching over to dinky little conical filters and saying its better. Surface area is key and you want more not less. Not only will it hold more dirt but it will have less restriction.

I'd have to agree with that. If you ever see the way IH implimented the 6.9/7.3 NA in their own trucks, they have an air cleaner that is HUGE compared to the ones our trucks came with. Easily 4 to 5 times bigger.

Well if i was going to do it i would run the paper filter that the guys with cummins run. The big round one. That has about as much filter as you could fit under the hood.

This is what I run, I'll probably get a taller element and a pre-filter down the road

Pre-Filter would help dramatically if you could find one to fit your particular filter. ;Sweet

Hello,
Do you know if it is easy to swap the IH air cleaner assembly on to a 6.9L ford ?
Thanks

Im running a K&N on my Chevelle and pla on running one on my truck as well, I love being able to wash it and re use it, i guess it because my family has so much good luck with ours. Throughout my family and all the hotrods and trucks that we have there are atleast 8 out of 15 vehicles that have a k&n on it

Now hold on a second! :backoff What's all this talk of open elements? I thought it was better to stay away from open air elements beause they suck all hot engine compartment air, which is bad since the air looses its density when it's heated. Something enclosed with access to cool outside air should be better, such as a stock set up with the restriction removed. Maybe we could actually fab kind of a double inlet from the grille to the housing. There you go...... a cheap mod that would double the amount of cool, dense air available! :sly
