Funny you say these 460 ZFs seemingly hard to find, I was looking at Facebook Marketplace the other day trying to find a 4x4 diesel ZF5, only found a couple… a handful of 2WD diesel ZF5s, TONS of 4WD 460 ZF5s, and really quite a few 2WD 460 ZF5s. I kinda want a 4WD Diesel ZF5, so I could have an overdrive. Also the 4:1 first gear is annoyingly high with my 3.55 diffs, seems like even just a hair lower 1st gear would be a blessing… and with the T19 I have, starting out in 2nd is very very hard… and really not worth it. Once you have fully released the clutch, the truck is barely moving, just super bogged down, even with a rev and slip. But my clutch engages super aggressively…

You can swap the transmission guts or drill the 460 housing to fit the IDI.

Lol, you already know I get a discount on shipping through work. I think something like that would be about $80-100 to ship
I guess so! No hurry, after I get this back together it'll be a year before I pull it again unless there's an issue. And really you could pull the main housing off and send me the guts and tail shaft housing together. Thanks @Nero !

Ahhhh....... unemployment bliss........ well kinda, I quit FedEx about a month ago and have been doing the "fix it stuff" guy/used lawnmower salesman thing. So I dropped the insurance on my tow truck to work on it for a while. The wheel lift gave up the ghost several months ago and all I've had is funtional winches back there.

I built some hoss daddy wheel ramps to get the tow body up so as to have some clearance to remove the wheel lift. Removing the wheel lift wasn't too bad, I used the engine hoist....... and gravity.

I'm posting a picture of the undercarriage so you can wonder like I do; how does all that wheel lift fit under there???

No, it was a regular 350 chassis. I'm glad the ZF5 is gone from the tow truck. I wanted the cast iron T19, I was just inconveniently rushed along to put it in. I DO have a driveline brake though. Thanks @Nero !!! And I also have a 4wd T19 that will accept it, so at some point im going to do the driveline brake on the T19, but I'll have to have my driveshaft shortened for that. It's coming though.
So the T19 is still in this tow truck, right? Do you still plan on the driveline brake? I got to mess with mine on my service truck. I do not think they are worth having. Legally have to have a parking brake, plus it’s just common sense, so I’ll keep that on my service truck, but that won’t keep me from thinking it’s garbage… non adjustable brake that really sucks to change the shoes on, I had it out from under the truck, and actually took the hub out to change the pads! Had to make a special hook to get the springs on, it’s pretty terrible! And from my understanding they aren’t even very good when they do work…

I pulled the transmission out of my service truck, got a different one with a functioning 5th gear… so the brake was out from under the truck, but methinks it would be impossible otherwise…

No, I had to put the zf5 back in it to have hydrolics. I figured out the zf5s issue and just lived with it until I pulled my wheel lift it off a while back. Honestly, I figured out that the front brakes hold the tow truck better when pulling with the winches so I was bringing my wife with me when I could so she could hold the brake pedal. I've almost written off the T19, because a PTO for one is as "rare as hens teeth". I'd almost prefer to find a 460 ZF5 really, and maybe a 4wd unit so I could have low gear, I don't want 4wd, just another lower gear for pulling and reversing the 9Klb monster.

I finally got seals for the wheel lift cylinders! Almost $300 for a bunch of 0 rings and such....... crazy. They didn't even use a gun!

Anyway, I replaced all the disentigrating rubber and have it back together. I really don't know how some of these seals actually held up a hay trailer going down the road!

The hard/scary part was the "struggle for life" moments of getting the monstrosity back under there and getting a bolt started! I had this little cart thing I got out of a junk pile that was just the right size for it to sit on and roll around. I had to jack the bed up to clear the main mounting plate. Got er dun.

I got a couple things to come up with to fire it off and move it again. Hopefully.....Lord willing, that'll go down in a week or two.
