Is the 6.9 really this gutless?

What kind of rpm where you turning it up to on the hills? With my 6.9 loaded up I'm usually teasing the governor at 70km/h in 3rd gear if I want to pull hard and steady.

I can see where you are coming from about the 6.9 seeming sluggish on the grades.

My old 6.9 4-speed made my living long-hauling cattle cross-country for many many years and it NEVER did it to really suit me, hence the 6BT being under the hood now = it is more than up to the task. :backoff

I have an old gas-burner 1978 Chevy with HD350 and 4-speed.

It takes gas through it faster than I can put it back in, but it will take the same loads up the same hills with far more authority than any 6.9 I ever drove.

That being said, I didn't start making any real money until I quit the gas-burners and went with the 6.9s.

You can't set the brakes, turn up the A/C or heater, and sleep all night in an idling gas-burner; you might just keep on sleeping forever; besides, a gas-burner will use as much idling as pulling.

Many is the hour that I have spent in the sleeper-bunk of the diesels and the engine set at a fast idle, burning maybe half-a-gallon in six hours.

With the old gas-burners, I was forever under the hood, replacing burnt valves, worn-out cam-shafts, sloppy distributors, etc., etc; whereas, very seldom do any of the diesels require more than a new fuel-filter and an oil-change.

I couldn't get six months out of a clutch in a gas-burner; whereas, I can usually get half-a-million miles on a diesel clutch.

I could go on making comparisons for pages, with the diesel almost always being the best.

I made this statement to a guy in the shop a few days ago that best sums it up :

So long as the diesel was a mechanical engine with NO electronics, if fuel were $12/gallon and gasoline were free, I would still pick the diesel truck and I would still make more money when the day was done, period. ;Sweet

What was on the trailer, the deck alone would weigh a little over 1100lbs.

Engine timing and fuel system condition play a major factor in how an IDI runs and it will make the difference between someone who loves their IDI or HATES it. If you are pulling a lot of weight you owe it to yourself to get a good set of gauges (Pyrometer, Turbo boost, and engine coolant temp). In the long run you will drive strictly by the tach, pyro and water temp and rarely glance at the speedometer :D

My truck gets slow pretty easy under load but no naturally aspirated gasser will win my heart over a turbodiesel when it comes to working hard in higher elevation ;Sweet

You should fill in your signature or tell us more about the truck. Especially how many miles it has and if the fuel system components have ever been replaced. And as Towcat said, post some pictures of what you have going on under the hood.
I'm willing to bet you have worn out injectors and/or a tired IP, fueling a motor that is out of time. These engines live and die by their fuel system components, and a world of difference can be had by replacing them with fresh, quality parts.
Also, remember to wind the motor out when you get loaded and going up these hills. Higher RPM's will let that turbo sing, keeping your EGT's down and your power up with more boost. You need to spend some time in the archives reading up on the upgrades these engines like. Add a pyro and a boost gauge, adjust your wastegate(if applicable) to allow more boost, replace your injectors with quality pop-matched Delphi BB injectors (Contact Agnem or Typ4), consider renewing your IP if it hasn't been done in the last 100,000 mi, and get your timing set where it needs to be. A little time and a few searches in the archives will afford you all of the information you need to get this done.
Be patient, and take the time to learn this motor, what it wants and how it likes to be driven, in addition to what needs updated/replaced, and I gaurantee you won't be thinking about gasser 454's anymore. But, as stated, the information we have is kind of vague. If you are pulling a 15,000 lb trailer up a 7% grade...... it's going to be sluggish.
Good luck, and welcome to OB. I hope we can help you get your IDI where it needs to be.

Stating You have a 6.9 would leave Me to believe that You have a 83-86. The rear brake adjusters on these rigs, really do nothing. You'll need to jack the rear, support on stands, and adjust the rear brakes manually. Remove the rubber plugs on the backing plates, and adjust the brakes until You hear a little drag. Then a coupla more clicks.

You were using trailer brakes, right?

ive towed with a 350 carb'd 4spd with 3.73, a 454/4l80E/4.10s, 350fi/th400/3.42s, and my 7.3 idi turbo/zf5/4.10s.

in the hills the idi and the 350/4spd own. throw in a gear run it to the limiter and hold.

Open road the 4l80e is nice and doesnt top out like my idi truck does at 75.

But as a whole my IDI pulls harder, stronger, and suck 1/2 the fuel as the 454 combo.

Posting this from my phone. Please bear with me. While my supension has bern gi img me problems as of late. I pull my 12000 lb fifth wheel all over the country with my 6.9. My bet is on a tired fuel system. Pump, injectors, and fuel filter. While I will admit I can't pull at 80 I can pull at 65.

I think you will find that when you get your 6.9 squared away correctly, you won't call it gutless. It's not fair to get a new to you truck, that was discarded by someone else (no doubt having defered any maintanance on it for as long as they thought they could get away with it) and jump in it and expect it to perform at its peak. You have much to do if you want to get 100% out of it. We can even help you get %130 percent out of it.

My 6.9 with ATS turbo pulls my loads pretty good. I haven't turned up my pump, or advanced the timing yet. I bet I am going to really love it when I get it tuned for max performance.
