Interference engine?

My fiance's Dad has my old 1995 S10. The other day, in town, it popped & died. The Chevy dealer says the timing chain broke, but can't tell me if it's an interference engine, or not. Thus far, the interporn has been mildly infuriating, at best.
The truck has over 250k on it & isn't worth fixing, if it has valvetrain damage. If I can throw a couple hundred bucks into a timing set, gaskets & such, I'd love to fix it for him. He can't really afford to replace it, right now. Mostly, it's a hunting & beat-around rig.

Any advice from the learned degenerates around here?

I guess you could pull the plugs and try turning it over by hand...

I owned a 97 2.2L but i couldn't tell you if it was interference...

Yeah. That's what I'm up against. It's tr4uly amazing, that the dealership can't tell me. Seems like that sort of thing would be noted in the repair manual, for things to check under timing chain replacement.

We aren't about to put $1000 into a 250k S10. If it was just a matter of a couple hundred, fine. If I put a couple hundred in it & it has valvetrain or piston damage, I pretty much just wiped out what i'd get for salvage value.

At ths point, it's almost worth more as a trailer, except that he can't afford to get another rig, right now.
