IDI Fast Idle Mod.- is it worth it?

Sounds about right actually. Tho if quality is anything like their throttle cables I wouldn't touch it w/ a 20-foot pole. jm2c

I've been hearing that lately about dorman stuff.
I guess I haven't used much of that product line, but will definitely stay away.
At least it'll give someone an idea what to look for.

It's usually the plastic components on their throttle cables that are less than ideal fit and finish, the steel parts seem fine to me. The major parts of a vernier cable are usually metal, so it may be just fine... One way to find out, lol. But for cheap alternatives look at commercial-use trucks in salvage yards, I got my cable from a wrecked road tractor but I've also seen them in pickups used by power companies or tree services.

Definitely. Especially something like this that shouldn't wear out fast, just get it used. I've been meaning to take a trip to some of the big truck salvages in my area to see what kind of goodies I can find.

Wyreth, exactly man. Way simple ways of doing stuff. I don't know what they call them, but the twist cable with the red release button in the middle would be perfect.
What'd be cool is something referenced to said accessory, lets say an air comp, so that once a preset pressure is reached, it'll kick down to normal idle. Then when the pressure drops, it'll kick back up.

Actually that would be DEAD simple to do with an electronic throttle kick, and solenoids with .5in of throw and enough strength to move the throttle are not too hard to find.

but I can also think of a couple ways to do it pneumatically.

Thanks man. I've spent a lot of time (and money) getting it there...

I didn't want to spurt out anything, because I haven't done any testing yet. But we have plenty of actuators available to make a better high idle solenoid.
Numero uno: idle air control valve from a gasser. Usually have four wires, can also be setup to be adjustable from in cab.
Die zwei: a door lock actuator. Would give a good size jump in idle, but non adjustable.

Plenty of other stepper type motors to be used.
Just gotta know your electrical components.

I had thought about the door lock actuator before but was told they would burn up in short order since they're not rated for continuous duty.

I would be interested in such a kit. But i would also want the option to keep the idle high for jump starting or live hydraulics...

Id be interested in an electric kit (thats adjustable) so long as it was a case of bolt it on and wire it up vs having to custom make a bracket, my high idle solenoid is going out (will slowly lower rpms untill back to normal so have to reset it) and would love a cheaper option that could set the high idle itself.

Could an electric cruise control controller from a '93-? Ford work? Maybe use a headlight switch. The rheostat could be used to inplace of a speed sensor to control idle speed? The two postition poll portion could be for OBA if someone has that setup. Just spitballing here.

For people with cruise control, something along those lines would work.

Since I'm now selling my engine to my brother, I wont be able to mock anything up.
But as a collective, I think we can all work on this.

When I can, I'll still see what I can figure out using a iac valve.

I had an idea for a manual truck to use the tach sensor instead of the vss for the signal. Then if you want high idle just don't put it in gear.

I measured the signal (millivolts AC) on the tach sensor, but don't have a vss to measure different speeds.

Of course this would only work for manual trucks, but you could use an ON-ON switch for the autos to switch back...

Interesting discussion here, guys. I think I am just going to install the diode and switch as detailed in the tech forum. I hope to pick up the diode from a Radio Shack over the weekend. Too darn cold right now to actually do the mod though.

I'd highly suggest against any rigging of the cruise control circuits - if at some point your work fails you may easily end up w/ a self-redlined engine, but w/o the one-hit-drop-to-idle feature the mechanical vernier cables provide.

Thanks for the discussion guys. I went ahead and installed the mod using the write-up in the Tech Forum as my guide (thanks Dsl Dog Catcher!) and it work great. It was easy to do and now I can make my truck fast idle at 950rpm with a switch on the dash. Easy mod that is well worth it in my opinion.
