The tone ring had a chipped tooth, but I'm not too worried bout that, cause if my speedo still didn't work then fine, I wasn't rebuilding the rear end just for that.

Help me understand this, you did not have a speedo prior to pulling the cover? If that is the case, did you replace the sensor because you thought it was bad? So, the ring gear could have been loose at that time?

Now, when you refilled it, did you use TL addative? You need that if you have a TL rear. That was kind of off the subject but if it did not have the same viscosity, I wonder if it caused a vibration as you were using it.

I say this because I put a new pinion seal in my car and used full synthetic lube with the addative. After that, the TL has been (I assume) locking the inside tire and chewed up the spider gears. It was so bad that it sounded like someone was beating the car with a hammer when I would make a right turn.

I have to wonder if the ring was cocked to the side and was just holding the bolts in place. After being put back together just got loose and the bolts worked their way out.

Okay, when I replaced the sensor it came apart it was obviously old and seized up in there and the aluminum piece that held all the components remained in there, and upon trying to take it out without the cover off it fell in there, so I opened the cover and took it out. I assure you nothing else was in there, and I touched nothing, cleaned the cover and the diff.... new RTV.... added the TL additive and lucas 80W-90 gear oil in there. Didnt have a single problem with it, drove it probly close to 500 miles in that week to work and back, etc.

I have a 10.25" carrier and a 4.10 ring/pinion if you need one already removed from a rearend. I also have another complete 10.25" with 4.10 gears as well.

Good pics Sam. Sorry to hear of your troubles.
It looks like the ring gear bolts started backing out on you, the ring rear started walking back and forth and literally blew the outside of the tone ring off and pushed it over to the drivers side. Given that, the ring and pinion, carrier and tone ring are probably shot. Axle gears, spider gears etc MAY be OK but most likely on diassembly you're going to find metal having gone through them. The gears are only case hardened so any slight damage is going to only get worse. Best bet would probably be a complete drop in 10.25 assembly.

If you replace the complete assembly, make sure you are getting one that is 1992 or newer. You might already know that, but I wanted to mention it anyway after all the offers for used rear axles.

How do the ring-gear teeth look ??

Was it a broken bolt that made the hole in the cover ??

Seeing as how this happened while crawling around in the pasture, instead of at speed, you may be fortunate enough to simply replace all the ring-gear bolts, straighten out the tone-ring, and be none the worse for the experience.

It is worth a try and you sure don't have nothing to lose.

On the other hand, it may be too far gone; I can't tell much from the pictures.:dunno

Okay, 4xgirl, what DO the teeth look like? And you did not answer my previous post. Why did you replace the sensor? Was the speedo not working or did you have it dagnosedd that way for the RABS or what? I have a strange feeling your ring was already half off and that was the problem. If the teeth look good on the spider gears AND on the ring, shove the exciter ring back on and bolt it down. Put it back together and drive it a few hundred miles. Go from there. And don't worry, I will get these guys some pix of me in my swimsuit with my ride in the background...That will hold them over.

hahahaha......

The speedo quit working a while back, so I tried to just pull the plug from the sensor and clean it up and put some conductive grease on it and that did nothing, so I was informed that replacing that little sensor may be my issue. As I said it was stuck in there pretty bad, should have only been the one bolt on top to get it off, but it was seized up in there and the whole sensor cam apart in about 5 pieces. So had that little aluminum thing not fallen in there I would never had changed the fluid at the time.

The ring gear teeth appear to be okay. The ring gear bolts are tight, and don't want to get any tighter???? Even though they are backed off. I dunno, I'm sure that's not good. The tone ring teeth are less than good, ones sideways and the two around it aren't perfect... The tone ring doesn't stay put it either, it just moves around on there you can place it there put it's loose???

Sam, I hate to say it, but I think you toasted it. Here is why. Part of that sensor is a magnet. Anything that fell into the case that you retrieved, was probably everything but the magnet. The magnet would have been stuck to the tone gear. The best option would have been to jackstand the axle and slowly rotate it. IF you could have gotten it all the way around without jaming, you would have found the magnet. If it jammed, you would have known there was something still in there. Let this be a reminder to all of us that correct operation should always be assured before we button up something. Moostradamus says... your rear does have a certain magnetic attraction. :D

It's a pain in the ass when a rear end let's go. I had it happen about about 10 years ago on my 86. Was towing a trailer home from Vegas, and and the rear axle go out. Luckily it was 4x4, so I locked it in and drove home as a FWD truck, then I just had a shop fix it.
