I just kept messin with it till it ran right. Someone told me a little on IP timing is alot. I turned my pump up and it made a night and day difference in power but the smoke is a little grey. Power is up EGTs are down, now if I could only get this truck to start easy life would be grand. Jon

I get grey smoke when I accelerate hard, not blue\grey like oil smoke like a dark grey. I got no hills to pull up its pretty flat down here so I never really see black smoke , seems I always hear about black smoke and pullin somthing up a hill and even having to down shift. Jon

slam1, that sounds normal for a stock truck and in your conditions.

funnyman06, the white part of that is a little concerning, possible timing related, does it run any different when its cold and the idle kicks up? I guessing your pushing on the diesel pedal pretty hard when you see the smoke. The easiest way to get rid of the smoke would be to not push so ******* the diesel pedal. Your next option would be to take it to a shop and have it timed or try playing with it yourself. Also look around for other problems, fuel leaks on top of the motor and anything else that doesn't look right. If you want the power you get with the diesel pedal to the floor you could turbo it.

I actully dont have to floor it to make smoke, if im cruising up a hill or half throttle with it it starts smoking pretty good. But there are no fuel leaks on it, its all extremely clean really. On thing is i believe the pumps been rebuilt but i dont know if it was ever timed after the install, i think it was just put back on the way it was. So im gonna tiker with it and look around for a shop that knows what they are doing.

aaklingler, I have a question. What makes the EGTs climb? I have my pump turned way up and I had my timing advanced to the point of rattling the injectors. The truck was very peppy but it just didnt sound right and the exhaust manifolds were pretty cool I expected under these conditions that my EGTs would climb, Why didnt they? Jon

The simplest answer is the the more fuel or probably more correctly the more smoke the higher the EGTs, but rpm and some other variables make a difference. I think you advancing the timing made a big difference in manifold temp. The other thing is that it sounds like your pump is getting worn out, blacker smoke should bring the EGTs up.
