I fall somewhere in the middle of the reliablility/all out performance scale. This truck served me well for many years. It did hard time pulling heavy loads almost daily. Everything from excavators, skidsteers, tractors, timber, firewood, and hay wagons could be found behind it on any given day. Now that I'm no longer in my old line of work, it's more a daily driven toy. It's earned its right to a little playtime. The level of power I'm shooting for would definitely NOT be reliable in a work situation, but driving around unloaded with the occasional 100 yard dash on a pulling track it will be fine. It just takes care and planning during the build, and then not flogging it every time you get behind the wheel. On the street, it will be operated within the stock parameters (in all likelyhood, the turbo I'm using won't even light off until around 3000 rpm). Then when I go to the track, the power will be there when I run it around 4500 rpms. Understood that the increased performance will naturally degrade the service life, but I don't think 400-500hp is out of the question for a "streetable" IDI.

I think Chris Barber is really the person best poised at this point to take us to the next known state of improvement. He has the decompressed engine, and just needs to go with the Super Moose and Super Moose Misters to see where that puts us on the horsepower and torque map. His below average HP and EGT's indicate an engine hungry for fuel. If he could just find the funds..... :dunno

JD,

As far as I know, Trav never had the E-1 on the Dyno, nor officially had the Nanny Goat on the dyno. I do know the Nanny Goat was on the dyno once, not to test for hp/tq, it was on there at a Cummins shop, it had a leak that he wanted stopped, and he did not have the time to work on it, he took it to a shop, they cleaned the engine and ran it on a dyno to exersize it, to find the leak. There were no slips from this, since it was not on there for that, but the tech made a comment the HP was HIGH.......

I do know on the E-1 before it "burned down" the last time, the butt dyno said it was stronger/faster that any other IDI out there...... but there again we get back to the longevity. He was playing with it, injecting water/**** into it at a rate to put out a house fire. He went throught something like 15 GALLONS of water/**** in an hour or so, and this fun cost him cracks in ALL 8 pistons, and tried to shove the wrist pins throught the crown of the piston, since he was hydrolocking the engine on each compression stroke. So it made alot of power...... for a couple of hours....

Travis did have the E on a dyno but of course its been a long while ago the numbers were just above 200 and there was some discussion about the gear he used I beleive OD instead of drive as he wanted real life numbers as to what he sees when driving down the road :dunno but if I'm wrong hopefully Travis will chime in and set me straight;Sweet

Aric,

You are correct, Trav did have the E-1 on the Dyno. We were talking about that yesterday after i made the other post. I think he said that it was 201 HP / 388 Tq. That was turbo with a turned up pump. This was not with the hot pump he had, nor with the water/****.
