dads upgrading the turbo on his cummins. its the baby hy35. would this be an improvement over my banks turbo? ie worth the work/fabrication?
if not ill just get an hx35.

why not throw it in the system, and get yourself two turbos? The hy for down low, the banks for up high. Free is free.
HX35 works fine. I'm making ~15 psi and that's with a pretty good exhaust leak. I can burn all the fuel a full moose pump will put out. HX40 seems like it'd be too big unless you're really trying for crazy boost and have a built engine to match.
The HY35 may be a bit small - it's the same intake side but a smaller A/R and turbine, so you'll get high backpressure.
The tubine inlet flange is the same between a HX35 & banks, and the outlet is similar in type and location to the banks wg turbo (not remotely close to the not wg) but about 1/4" smaller is diameter so I don't think a stock downpipe would fit right. I wound up welding the downpipe directly to the outlet cover and just removing the 5 bolts that hold it to the turbine housing to remove the downpipe, but not sure if this would work with a stock downpipe.
The oil drain flange is the same between banks wg & HX35, oil inlet is not. Banks is 1/4 NPT, HX35 is a banjo bolt so you need an adapter.
The intake side housing is about 1" bigger in diameter and the inlet is 4", not 3" as on the Banks wg. The compressor outlet is a v-band style - a 2 1/2" rubber hose will work instead. Banks wg takes a 2" hose.
The HX35 wastegate actuator will probably also cause you problem in the stock location.
So it's not a plug and play swap, but is not a huge difference.
thank you very much my friend. very very informative post there. lots of pertaining information. this swap doesnt seem out of my realm of fabrication skills. are you happy with the moose pump/hx35 setup? what do you do with it? im just looking to tow efficiently and strong up long hills. seems like my banks lets things heat up quickly. i plan on putting an intercooler in when i put the new motor/turbo in.
thank you again for your input, i value that information highly. lol.
