Okay,
I know I've seen on here guys saying they run on wmo, so how's it done???

I just found out a friend who manages a fleet shop can get me tons of wmo from their vehicles. He can even sort out the type of fluid I want and discard the rest. oil vs. trans fluid vs brake fluid vs hydraulic fluid...

I don't even know where to begin and I cannot afford to ruin my engine learning what not to do.

Someone please help me out, ie .. directions... a recipe...??? :dunno

Filter it, some go as low as 1 micron. 50-50 is pretty safe. Run 1 tank straight diesel ( could add a little oil) to start and shut the truck off with.

If you wanna run it good you'll want to add heaters or if your manual plumb into the unused tranny cooler. Warmer oil flows better.

Motor and tranny oil is fine, Hyd I've heard doesn't burn as readily. No clue on brakes. I'd run mainly the first 2 with some Hyd unless you can just get the first 2

WMO and trans fluid are OK, but not brake fluid. Filter them down to at least 1 micron and you should be good to go.

I'm not up on how clean they will get things, but some here are using them. Do a search here on filtering WMO, there have been quite a few threads on it. I just gravity feed all mine through 10, 5 and 1 micon filters.

yeah,
that centrifuge was one that I saw. I think cleaning with a centrifuge would be cheaper in the not too long run since I would not be going thru so many filters.

Also,
does running on wmo create return line leaks like biodiesel does??

On a set up like PA biodiesel how many times would it need run thru to get to .5 micron filtration??

THat depends on how dirty your collection oil is. My oil is super nasty stuff so I am intending on filtering 4-5x to get super clean oil.

I run it when I can get it. I'll collect it from friends, what I have from the farm and what I can find until I have enough to work with. I use a filter & centrifuge and run it, 50 gallons at a time, through this for a few hours. Keep it clean and always filter at ever step of handling. I try not to use too much oil from diesel engines because it has more carbon suspended in it. Seems to me that extra carbon would be very abrasive and will shorten the life of your fuel system.

Since you are getting your oil from a fleet manager I would assume they have some adherance to PM schedules so the oil you are getting will probably be in good shape.

You will have to experiment to come up with a recipe that works for you. I use 25 gallons of used oil, 25 gallons of diesel fuel and a gallon or so of some type of diesel fuel additive - whatever is your preference.

Couple of things...

Never fill both tanks with this "stuff". Always keep some regular fuel in one of the tanks for a "rescue" tank. Always keep a spare fuel filter with you. If you are using a mechanical fuel pump it wouldn't hurt to have one of those in your tool box either. It will bring out all the weaknesses of your fuel system.

When I make fuel and have to handle it I really hate it because it is nasty. On the other hand, when I am out of fuel, out of cash, and it's still several days until payday it is nice to be able to pump in a few gallons to keep going.

I'm not sure. I have used straight hydraulic oil, I think I went about 200 feet and then had to drain the tank.

I do know that the flash point & autoignition point of hydraulic oil is considerably higher than diesel fuel so I would imagine that our engines just don't create enough heat in the compression stroke to allow pure hydraulic oil to burn.
