Here is some info I have from an old Car Craft Article I clipped out years ago. It's the Old School trannies. Newer automatic are better. If the C6 is really that high, then my engine is making a WHOLE LOT more hp on the dyno that I have thought. I 'd be interested to know why the C6 is so much higher than the others:

Parasitic Power Loss, Automatic Transmissions:

Ford C-6- 55-60 hp
Ford C-4- 28 hp
Ford FMX- 25 hp
Chrysler A904- 25 hp
Chrysler 727- 45 hp
Powerglide- 18 hp
TH-400- 44 hp
TH-350- 36 hp

finally went and looked at the truck. its gonna need one battery for sure. it had one new one and one old one, so it cranks slow. it ran pretty good, kinda down on power though. it barely rattled any so im thinking the timing is retarted quite a bit. no black smoke at all. at 160k miles im thinking pump and injectors are pretty worn, hopefully getting it in time and a flat or so on the ip and it will be back to its normal self untill i can afford a pump and injectors. transmision done great, said he had papers for a rebuild that i could have if wanted. barely any blow by, returns and caps seemed dry. heres some pics

the heavier duty the box, the more slippage in the converter= more parasitic loss , they have to allow more slippage or you;d never get a heavy load moving. This is why the later lockup boxes do so much better on fuel mileage, but dont last as long either because that slippage acted like a fuse, it protected against too much load

When I got my '85 n/a with the c6 it was a dog. I had corey time it and I got a turbo off him.just the correct timing was a noticeable increase in power. After I added the turbo it was a rocket. I'd never drive an auto n/a again. At least the stick you can use the gears to get in the poweband.

One good thing is C6 is a torque monster they can handle what you throw at them. A nice upgrade to them is a torrington thrust bearing as that is one spot a lot of heat is made and power lost from the articles I have read.....

I've got a N/A 6.9 with the 4 speed and I love it. It'll lay tire on dry pavement and it sure has some get up and go. Snappy as all hell.

One thing to mention, since it was Carcraft.. they probably got these loses behind an engine that was making decent power.

60 HP loss at 600 hp is 10%
60 HP loss at 180 hp is 33%

and you can assume their numbers are peak loses, what kind of power is drained at say... 2000 rpm?

Yes, I agree. I just posted the numbers I had. Not vouching for them. I only copied the chart too, so I don't have the context of the article to understand how those figures were obtained.

This is confirmed. I just got off the phone with Brian Thompson (Brian's Truck Shop) and thrust washers was his take. More of them creates more friction. Torringtons eliminate a lot of the friction. If I ever rebuilt by c6, I'll l=ook into that. C6s are one of the esieist trannys to rebuilt. BTW, Brian thinks the TH-400 is the strongest of the old school trannies and the 4R100 the strongest of the new (we didn't talk Allison). TThe TH400 and 4R100 work very similarly in that they are never uncoupled from the power flow in a shift and that's one of the secrets to strength.

Having gone from a C6 to a T19 the difference is huge, especially on hills. With the C6 pulling a 6-7% grade EMPTY I would slow to 50mph or less on a 2 mile pull, now I can crest the top at 70+ and actually accelerate on the hill if I get stuck behind another car.

Lots of people go to Th400's for high HP apps rather than staying with the C6, which is highly unwarranted, it's just like the other transmissions though, only certain builders know how to build them. That said, I am putting a 4R100 spec E4OD behind my 460... LOL

As for a C6 behind an IDI, slow, lots of slip, and with 4.10's, highway speeds are painful, that said, they are bombproof.
This 88 F350 weighs 23K full of de-ice fluid, and it happily has functioned with lots of low speed forward/reverse shuttle shifting for 5000 miles, not a big mileage number, but take into fact that it changes direction 6 times within 200 feet of travel to spray an airplane, 95% of the time it is at max gcwr, and until 2009 it had never seen low range.

The tag axle is a 10,000lb trailer unit, and the bumpers are filled with cement...

As for drivetrain power loss, the Allison is downright alarming. We recently had a mobile dyno brought in to the local car show, and the GM dealer brought out a 2011 2500HD with the Dirtymax, they were having issues with the tuner they had installed on it, and it ran 3 runs at bone stock levels.
Keeping in mind it is rated at 397 hp/765tq, it put down an average of 253/453 to the tires in stock trim, tuned it bumped up to 345/607, but it was still quite surprising just how much that driveline chews up.
My buddy's very mildly turned up 92 Cummins made 256/540 through a NV4500, another friends 07 with a smarty, muffler delete, and AFE intake made 457/839 through a 48RE with 37 inch tires...
