Local auto parts supplier. Its on summit too I believe. It was a cam and lifter set-$450. I don't know how much over stock as I never ran this engine before hand. Definately runs stronger than the 7.3 I had, but the 6.9 has a lot more work done.:sly

If you can figure away to make your govenor assembly kind of sticky, it would certainly lope, maybe even to the point of going through some pretty wild RPM swings.

speaking of RPM'S dyoung14 told me he got his govenor spring from you to make 4k+. if i get a moose pump can you put one of those in it? thanks

If you get a moose pump i really wouldnt touch it, mel gets those things perfect and can explain to you why he limits the RPMs on those pumps as low as he does. It has to do with the fuel timing curve i think.

Run your truck out of fuel at idle and you'll get an aggressive lope

I wouldn't recommend it. The only thing that is happening at those RPM is the breaking of rods, rockers, and valves kissing pistons............. There is nothing happening horsepower wise. All you are going to gain is a nice pile of broken IDI parts, not power!

Don't believe me, see my dyno graph with my Moose pump and injectors below: Power falls on its face after 3000 RPM.

By the way, that lope on big HP pullers/drag trucks is caused by a ton of fuel and advanced timing, not the cam.

What Heath said...frankly, this is one of the things I've always been afraid of. dyoung's been experimenting...but, just because he's done it doesn't mean that it's safe or a good idea, ESPECIALLY on a stock engine. At the VERY least, you need stiffer valve springs, to overcome the tendency for valves to float and/or lose their keepers and get swallowed  and you also have to be concerned with the rotating mass and how well that's going to hold up.

Just to clarify, what I've been afraid of in this instance is that someone would read dyoung's posts and assume that it's safe to over-rev one of these engines based solely on what he did. I would rather strongly recommend reading through all of his posts, paying attention to the issues that have come out of his experimentations, before going through with that. And, I've said it before, but please let me say it again...I firmly contend that the engineers at IH limited these engines to 3400 RPM for a reason. For that matter, they're limited to 2800 RPM in IH applications...so, they already brought the governed RPM's up on a Ford application. If you want to go beyond that, go for it, but keep in mind that a) you do so at your own risk and b) there are potentially significant dangers involved....to your engine primarily, but there's a potential safety concern if you experience an uncontained engine failure...

Just my $.02...

I will get you a Super Moose with whatever RPM spring you want. A regular Moose Pump, no. I will not sully the reputation of the Moose Pump with such modifications. Now, if you want to buy a Moose Pump, and a spring seperate, and put it in yourself, and void your warranty, then that is fine.

My engine won't need a super moose pump. I'm gonna need a regular moose pump because I'm gonna be running a psd turbo if I can make it work.

my truck came with the cheapskate way to make it lope at idle--

it's got a throttle cable with twist-lock.

the Fire Dept that I bought it from had the idle screw on the IP set way up at 1000 RM so that it would run the floodlights that were on the truck without draining the batteries.

When I first set the idle back down to something sensible, I accidentally undershot and I found it sounded like a cammed-up big block if you set it down to about 450-500 RPM.

So- turn the idle scew on the IP way down (the oil system has such huge flow/ abundant pressure/ regulator that that should not be a problem) and then use the throttle cable from within the cab to set the idle for what you want for either practicality or effect depending on circumstance.

How's that for an $11.99 solution for your desire to make rumbly idle sounds that hint of vast power waiting to be tapped? The cable also makes for a cheapskate's cruise control, although you'd better be on the ball to whack it in when you need to slow down.

In know in the powerstrokes at least DP a chip maker can make you a custom tune that lopes. It is advertised by them, and is an option, I have heard it on one truck that was well built by a guy in the central valley I sold a 7.3lps engine as a core when he came over, and damn it sounded mean. Only way you are getting a lope with an idi is with a custom cam grind, that actually makes the lobes taller, and longer, and I am not sure there is anyone that is willing to make one right now. maybe if you drop enough cash you could get a custom cam made somewhere.

A Detroit like a 6.2 or 6.5?? No thanks!! Lol I'd rather have my na 7.3 than the turbo 6.5!

No. A TWO STROKER! Detroit couldn't build a 4 Stroke to save it's ass until the 60 Series came about.
