Greetings one and all. Playing with the '94 F350 7.3 factory idi T and it appears to have developed a nice "Hollow sound" from out of the engine exhaust. Sounds like a good "Whoofing" air pump. Acceleration now produces a trail of black smoke and a very fast one time only, so far, appears to be diluted engine oil (?) Engine was warm and oil recently changed when I checked it. I suspect a stuck injector that dumps fuel. Silly engine now seems to have a bit more power to go with it and now rolls coal under full acceleration.
Stuck injector or other?
I suspect I will be loosening injectors for a cylinder balance test. Just what I desired, diesel running all over the engine.
Right track or another course? Not playing until the "s-NO-w" goes away and hopefully the temps warm up a bit.
Thank you for your time.

My first thought was a bad exhaust valve guide but that wouldn't cause the black smoke or make it feel like it has more power. The diluted oil, the smoke, and more power could come from a bad injector like you're thinking. That would seem to be the right direction. Did you smell the oil to see if it smells like fuel?

You have snow over there? We ain't got sh*t over here.
Could be the timing advance got stuck, have you tried running any fuel cleaner through it yet? Typically if you have a stuck injector it'll white smoke at idle and you'll have a noticeable fuel knock when driving.

Snow is starting to come down tonight at my 1200 Ft elevation. Wednesday should be the real fun day. Timing advance sounds plausible. It started this with my foot flat in it and just after adding a dose of "Hot Shot" to a rebuilt (Oregon Injection) IP. Injectors also new at the time, about 10K ago.
I believe heard the engine make a real quiet "pop" sound when this first happened. With the snow coming down I am in not much hurry to get this done.
So probably another week at least.
Timing advance inside the ip. I suppose best thing is to send it back to Oregon Injection for a rework?

If you heard a pop, could be a boost leak you're hearing. Top hat seal to intake probably.

The minimalistic noise is hard to describe, but that silly thing seemed to gain power when it did which would negate a blown snail seal. Speaking of which the PO glued into place and that is yet another project.
Snow at least for 2 more days and the idi is not a daily driver.
I am leaning to the timing advance being stuck which is inside the pump or a possibly stuck injector. the sound I heard was only due to the radio not playing when it occurred. This should be fun when I get to it.

Once the snow is gone you're welcome to swing by and I could take a peek at it with ya, but try some fuel cleaner first, see what she do.
