    Ok here's the formula....
The platform will be a 4x4 minni truck.
The bellhousing back will be a 5 speed truck tranny (granny 1st and an od 5th) need to pick this also, needs to be able to adapt onto the eng.
Transfer case will be an Atlas 4 sp. They make their own adapters to the trans.
The axles will most likely be dana 44's
    Possibly currie high 9'$
This is gunna be my last rockcrawling rig, so no computers or fancy electronics to fail on the trail 3 days from civilization!
Thinking 4-6 cyl turbodiesel lighter the better!
Edit, easy parts availability and low end drive ability. Read grunt and able to run down the highway at 70+.
Donor project body needs to have cargo space for 3-5 days out... Say 3x5' min.
Might rock a quad cab minni with a bobbed bed.

5 cylinder Benz engine in an early Scout would be pretty cool.

I hate looking at them in stock form, but there's nothing better to do with a Geo Tracker body than stick one on a completely purpose built crawler with mechanically injected diesel.

I like the thought of going all out on the trans/transfercase/axles, but keeping the engine super simple and devoid of spark plugs.

What about one of these .... 2.5L turbo found in Ford courier/ranger and Mazda Bounty - they only need 1 wire to the ip to run and go very well as long as you don't overheat them

Would you get these there as "grey imports"?

Vw tdi's are a common swap. I think extreme 4x4 has a build on a truggy with one. I believe they ran it on wvo also.

    Edit
One of the guys in my club has a jeepster cammando and a scout II I am drooling over...

The next choice will be a newer pickup as parts are easy to come and I get a.c....
Geo sounds lacking in gear capacity.

    Edit
Love the sammi's u turns inside of my yota tracks all day long. Just 2 small.
Now putting an eng that weights as much as the truck:rotflmao

    Edit
    Hmmm
    That's interesting, thanx
    Perhaps a jdm half cut.
    Thanx Mate

Looks like a 69 jeepster commando is likely the platform...
Comes with a running 4.3 chebbie that was to be swapped in for the dauntless

I miss my zero (mitsu built 4x4)...
I saw your post, need to go thru it.
By the time I'm done there most likely won't be much stock Drive train left (the problem with both the mitsu and chevy love 4x4' I've owned) not "real" wheelers....Did I mention I'm into rock crawling? Sorry for the mall crawlers!

I think I'm needing around 200 ponies more torque the better, Bullitt proof reliability, and easy parts availability.

the grey mkt. Ford looks like a pita.
the tdi is computer controlled, thus out.
gunna look at the 1.9 aaz.
    The benz might work.
I wonder about support for a 40 year old platform tho..

There is a fair amount of aftermarket Benz support.

I used Mazda running gear with the mitsu engine. About on par(though not as highly thought of) as similar vintage Toyota running gear. Probably not adequate for 200+ ponies or the 400+ f\lb of torque you'll see with it.

I agree that here the Mazda diesel would be a pain. The mitsubihi is slightly less of a pain. It was at least sold here for a couple years.

If I were you, I'd be looking at 4bt's or industrial Isuzu npr motors... But Im still pretty noobish.
The 1.9 mechanical vw may get you there. I'm not 100% sure. I know it's good for xj\suzuki transplants.

1.9 AAZ in a XJ? Really? The little VW can make enough power so that an XJ is not anemic with it? Do tell...

I don't know the story to tell it, I've just seen it done more than once. So that's all I'm going on...

Keep in mind, my daily driver is a 1985 xj with the 2.1td supplied by Renault. It's likely considered anemic in many circles...
