HD ELC Coolants - Where the heck do I buy it?

Ok I found some CAT ELC EC-1 HD ELC coolant locally.

yep and half the price of the Rotella ELC (I found some of it near Denver) which sells for $34.00/gallon here.

The only caution is that stuff uses organic acid technology so you *could* find yourself eventually changing the water pump and oil cooler orings if they haven't been done recently. I did my oil cooler orings before switching to ELC and had to replace the water pump a few months after. It is the best stuff for your engine though in terms of protecting it and you don't have to worry about SCAs or anything like that. Its expensive but a great value and its compatible with the Rotella stuff and a couple others.

what does it do to water pumps? My oil cooler rings are a year old.

It may eat the seals, but then again maybe it was just time to replace that water pump. It appeared original and I had probably close to 180,000 miles on the truck at that time.

Should be just fine on the oil cooler I would think with them being recent.

I am the original ELC renegade convert

One kink is now that is "the" only coolant that can be in your system....if and when you need to top off, or add make up, you must use the same CAT ELC---it cannot be mixed with any "Dexcool" types or any water whatsoever!!!

Unless you have some deionized water! If mixed, it will turn to sludge and trust me!....it will also rot the hoses

I an emergency, such as a road side hose failure etc...of course anything can be used to get home ----but the entire system will need to be thoroughly flushed and new ELC used!

re: seals, older fact orig seals don't like it, but with the majority having replaced the water pump and cooler seal rings, the newer seals currently available have no issues with ELC.

No wanting to panic as I have run ELC in both my IDI and PSD and both have passed 300k ....

I have not heard of any......and it definatly cannot be mixed with the std green/gold coolant nor any that is OAT--such as Dexcool indentified by the Kool Aid orange color.

I thought Evans Waterless coolant was the best coolant for our trucks.... I know its expensive and when running it we don't use a preaaure cap either... Just wondering here because theres nothing else to do right now other than time my truck and set the tps....

Well, there is allways something better.....I looked into the Evans and backed off at the price ....and there is just something not comfy with having to "boil" out the system to remove all water.

I know of quite few people [via the boards] that run it...most of those are the new stuper doopys and while they do like it, just like their choice of truck----they can also afford it!

Typically our systems run 7-8 gallons......4 gallon price =$110 before shipping

I paid just over $12 for the last gallon of CAT ELC

The only problem I've found with ELC is that it'll eat teflon tape...all of the newly-installed fittings around my coolant filter began to leak almost immediately after installation. Some RTV around the fittings cured it as a temporary fix, until I need to tear it apart.

That said, when I switched over, my oil cooler O-rings and my water pump were less than 6 months old...and, I've been running it for over 3 1/2 years now and couldn't be happier. IIRC I paid about $50 for a 5 gallon bucket at a Cat dealer in 2005, and haven't needed to buy any since...
