hard to start when engine is hot

alright the past few weeks when the engine is hot i have to crank the hell out of the truck to get it to start. I get in the truck in the morning and in two cranks it starts right up. I drive it for about 20 minutes get to my frist errand stop get out go to start it 10 minutes later and i have to crank it for 20 seconds just to get it to turn over

ive heard of hard cold starting but hard warm starting?

Yep, x2 the head in the IP is getting worn, and with the heat cycle ut us taking, it just doesn't pump quite right. That is why a cold start, or if you have been sitting for a while (an hour or two) it will start up.

Time for a new/rebuilt ip.

great this pump has only 10,000 miles on it ive also noticed my truck lost 3-4mpg the past 2 months could this be cause of the pump also? the truck don't smoke or run bad its just hard to start. guess it might be time to get a moose pump

Ive heard that a sick/warn pump will make the exhuast stink. Have a buddy follow you around town and if he complains of the raw diesel smell then you need a new pump.

Not entirely true, the injectors will cause more than their share of raw fuel stink.

I am curious ,where did the IP come from with only 10k on it?

I just took a pump off of one of the track hoes that would absolutely not hot start, just got the call from the pump shop friday that it is the head and rotor, said 1 out of 100 will be worn enough to do this. Also sometimes it is a sticky delivery valve so dose it up with some stanadyne additive.

The head and rotor get enough clearance that they cant build hot fuel pressure during cranking.

Youre right Russ. Let me rephrase that:

A warn FUEL SYSTEM will cause a smelly exhaust.

Also just cuz its new dont mean it works. People have a tendency to think that "well i just bought it how could it not work?" I had a Craftsman Professional router (for wood) and used it only a couple of times before the circuit board fried on it.

Before diving into the IP check your lift pump. If that is bad that will cause the same symptoms as a bad IP. Been their done that. Also pull the fuel filter and see if it is full. If it is not full then more than likely your lift pump is bad or the fuel filter is leaking.
