headed up to my parents on Friday to spend Memorial day weekend.
got 20 miles from the house and heard what I thought was a rock in my front brakes.
went away, and a few miles later, came right back.
found a spot to pull over safely on a 2 lane river road.
soon as I slowed down I heard and felt it "chunk"
jiminy crickets.....
called a tow immediately as I knew I couldn't do jack on the side of a desolate highway with no bearings.

got it home and pulled it all apart, bearing would not come off the spindle.

ended up jumping in the unproven SD after the engine swap
(she made it there and back without a hitch)

got home a few hours ago, and messed with it a bit, map gas, hammers, pry bars....
im going to get more evasive tomorrow...
already had to work tonight.

I fear the bearing is welded to the spindle, marring the steel.

cross your fingers for me, I may need a new spindle.

the driver was a green horn and almost dropped my truck off in the delta, had to pull over and show him how to tie a vehicle of this size down lol

Think I'll check my wheel bearings tomorrow as this sort of thing seems contagious LOL

My next front brake job will include cleaning and repacking the front wheel wearings. My guess is they have not been done is 18 plus years and probably 275,000 plus miles.

You can always try splitting the bearing.
But I guess that depends if it's the inner or outer. Lol

I don't think it resembles it's former self at this point. Not only is it one heated up and seal glob at this point,it's probably now melted into the spindle too.
This is why yearly safely inspections are nice.Once a year, they jack the front up and check for play in the wheels. When the bearing has too much play, they make you change it.
Usually a wheel bearing will howl and hum for a bit.I wonder if it was over tightened.Especially considering this truck was just put together.

Timken bearings can be picked up at autozone which is handy.

Does Timken make the duralast ones? Last time I went into AZ looking for bearings they only had duralast and didn't have a clue who made them....

heres the carnage,
was able to get a porta power and a tie rod puller to break it loose.
altho everything but the bearing and spindle made it out alive, ive got some work to do.
I dislike the looks of the spindle, but sourcing one can be a headache.
may have to rob peter to pay paul.
I need to depend on this truck, the MANchero can life with subpar parts? or atleast until I find one.

yup, last year, I didn't hear any howling or noise from it prior, but now that I think about it, tires and bearings can sound alike. I did repack the bearings, but I havnt checked it since.

with the noise of the engine and the tires I can see how it flew under the radar.

I am use to the engine noise but not so much the tires.

That I don't know. They carried both Timken and their house brand/duralast,the last I knew.Perhaps they no longer do then.

I did the same job last September. On our farm we've come to realise that even the best packed fresh bearings sometimes have a manufacturing defect that grossly shortens their life. Glad it wasn't a catastrophe and just an inconvenience. Shall I keep my eyes open for a spindle?

Timkens are good. Bearings are one thing to NOT skimp on, even though the price for offbrand bearings may look appealing.
Glad your alright Brian. Good thing that didn't happen on your camping trip up north last winter. That would have been worse than dead glowplugs lol
